But the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/virginia\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"96\">Virginia<\/a> outcome poured fuel on the redistricting fire, pushing DeSantis to sign a map that could <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/4553897\/desantis-signs-new-congressional-maps-netting-gop-4-seats\/\">net Republicans four more seats<\/a> in Florida. The Supreme Court also dealt Southern Democrats a blow in <em>Louisiana v. Callais<\/em>, striking down <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4410470\/supreme-court-strikes-down-race-based-redistricting-map-in-louisiana\/\">race-based redistricting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>But Jeffries and Morelle announced jointly on Monday that Democrats plan to keep the ball rolling with the national gerrymandering fight, starting next with \u201cThe New York Democracy Project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just the beginning. Across the nation, we will sue, we will redraw and we will win. House Democrats will not allow a MAGA majority to be built on rigged maps and the dilution of Black voting strength. After Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/4428980\/malliotakis-district-at-risk-after-judge-approves-new-york-redistricting-plan\/\">Nicole Malliotakis<\/a> (R-NY) fought back against the Democratic push, the Supreme Court granted Malliotakis\u2019s emergency <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/25pdf\/25a914_1p24.pdf\">petition for a stay<\/a> on a state court\u2019s ruling that the map would have to be redrawn before the 2026 midterm elections. This Supreme Court ruling left the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >11th district intact<\/a> and squashed the 2025 Democratic effort to redraw.<\/p>\n<p>But Jeffries\u2019s announcement on Monday marks a new Democratic push for redistricting in the Empire State. The announcement said Morelle will ask Albany leaders to, in part, consider amending the state constitution to allow mid-decade redistricting, in line with a proposal from state Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris that could allow new maps by the 2028 elections.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kathy-hochul\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3278\">Kathy Hochul <\/a>(D-NY) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/2050636633477718044?s=20\">voiced support<\/a> for redistricting the Empire State on Saturday, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KathyHochul\/status\/2049933155176489294?s=20\">saying<\/a> \u201cit\u2019s time to fight fire with fire.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>New York Republicans have slammed Hochul over redistricting, pointing to the times New Yorkers have voted to support independent redistricting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlbany Democrats will scheme behind closed doors to gerrymander Congressional district maps that ignores the law and benefits them politically.
