The new map took effect immediately and, according to Florida Politics, could help Republicans gain up to four additional seats-perhaps shifting from a prior 20-8 split in Republicans\u2019 favor to a larger advantage.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis had urged a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-redistricting-lawsuit-could-cost-congressional-republicans-up-to-six-house-seats\/\" title=\"NY ... Lawsuit May Result in GOP Losing Six ...\">mid-decade redistricting<\/a> special session in part to align the maps with the U.S. Supreme court\u2019s decision in *Louisiana v. Callais*, which limited the use of race in redistricting. Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Monday that redistricts the state\u2019s congressional map to be more favorable to Republicans. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigned, Sealed, and Delivered,\u201d the governor <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/2051332545841660356?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> on X with an attached photo of the new map. <\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-534775247\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/794576-ron-desantis-signs-floridas-new-congressional-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Florida Politics<\/a>, the new map \u2014 which takes effect immediately \u2014 could potentially net Republicans an additional four seats during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nrcc-chief-looks-to-expand-2026-majority-with-compelling-candidates-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"NRCC chief looks to expand 2026 majority with &#039;compelling&#039; candidates - Washington Examiner\">upcoming 2026 midterm elections<\/a>. Under the now-former map, Republicans hold 20 U.S. House seats, while Democrats hold eight. <\/p>\n<p>The new map \u201cleaves four Democratic U.S. Representatives in Florida \u2014 U.S. Reps.\u00a0Kathy Castor,\u00a0Jared Moskowitz,\u00a0Darren Soto\u00a0and\u00a0Debbie Wasserman Schultz\u00a0\u2014 with districts that now lean Republican based on the last presidential election results,\u201d according to the outlet. <\/p>\n<p>The Florida House (83-28) and Senate (21-17) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026D\/1D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> the new map last Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>DeSantis first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/eog\/news\/press\/2026\/governor-ron-desantis-announces-special-legislative-session-congressional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> plans in January to call the state legislature into an April special session to partake in mid-decade redistricting. The goal, according to the governor, was \u201cto ensure that Florida\u2019s congressional maps accurately reflect the population of our state and to comply with an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ruling in question was handed down by the high court last week amid the legislature\u2019s consideration of DeSantis\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/793140-gov-desantis-releases-proposed-congressional-map-for-florida-could-cut-4-democratic-seats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed map<\/a>. Known as <em>Louisiana v. Callais<\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/29\/supreme-court-smacks-down-rampant-race-based-gerrymandering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6-3 decision<\/a> by Justice Samuel Alito kneecapped states\u2019 ability to use race in the redistricting process, a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >seemingly unlawful policy long favored<\/a> by Democrats to maintain majority-minority districts that favor their party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSection 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 \u2026 was designed to enforce the Constitution \u2014 not collide with it. Unfortunately, lower courts have sometimes applied this Court\u2019s \u00a72 precedents in a way that forces States to engage in the very race-based discrimination that the Constitution forbids,\u201d Alito wrote. <\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/2049498370155127066?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">April 29 tweet<\/a> responding to <em>Callais<\/em>\u2018 release, DeSantis said the court\u2019s decision \u201cimplicates a district in FL \u2014 the legal infirmities of which have been corrected in the newly-drawn (and soon to be enacted) map.\u201d The governor subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/2049855505598669147?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> a photo of the district at issue the following day, adding, \u201cWe said it was not constitutional under the upcoming <em>Callais<\/em> decision and now we\u2019ve been vindicated with the publication of the Supreme Court\u2019s opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"BliwboJUKdLrpteVXIN7AS9R0vC4kF5j3TQMgzyfPDhcq6un\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This was the District 20 racially gerrymandered district that the new FL map unwound.  <\/p>\n<p>We said it was not constitutional under the upcoming Callais decision and now we\u2019ve been vindicated with the publication of the Supreme Court\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Another racial gerrymander bites the\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Y6UVPHbMSW\">pic.twitter.com\/Y6UVPHbMSW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/2049855505598669147?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The new Florida map looks to offset potential Democrat gains in Virginia, where a slim majority of voters recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/21\/boosted-by-out-of-state-dark-money-virginia-passes-dems-deceptive-gerrymandering-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> a leftist-backed amendment allowing the commonwealth\u2019s Democrat-run General Assembly to gerrymander the state in their party\u2019s favor.
