The figure stems from **overpayments, fraud, or other causes**, with **overpayments accounting for $153 billion**.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the increase is tied to programs that reported improper-payment data for fiscal year 2025 but didn\u2019t report it the prior year. The problems where reported across **64 programs** in **15 agencies**, and nearly **three-quarters** of improper payments came from five areas: **Medicare, Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program),** and the **Shuttered Venue Operators Grant**. \t\t\t\t\tobserveElement(paragraphToObserve); \t\t\t\t}); \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>There was also a notable increase in improper payments from Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal agencies must do more to protect taxpayer dollars from the errors that drive improper payments,\u201d Acting Comptroller General of the United States Orice Brown said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis $186 billion problem demands urgent action \u2014 agencies need stronger controls, better data, a commitment to accountability, as well as robust Congressional oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The improper payments were reported from 64 programs across 15 agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three-quarters of the improper payments came from just five areas \u2014 Medicare, Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant.<\/p>\n<p>The release added that 19 programs \u201creported improper payment rates of over 10 percent, and six programs reported rates of over 25 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The $186 billion figure does not even represent the total amount of improper payments from the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government-wide estimate does not include some programs that were determined to be susceptible to significant improper payments,\u201d the Government Accountability Office said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, the $186 billion estimate does not include improper payments made under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government Executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/oversight\/2026\/04\/agencies-doled-out-186b-improper-payments-last-year-gao-says\/413142\/?oref=ge-featured-river-top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the Trump administration has been seeking to address fraud with Medicare and Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>Mehmet Oz, who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, announced one week before the report that the administration would start requiring states to revalidate Medicaid providers.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump also recently appointed Vice President J.D.
