The 62% figure is his worst across both of his terms, nearly matching the even higher disapproval for how he is handling the Iran situation (66%).<\/p>\n<p>The article also notes declines in his ratings on cost of living,inflation,and the economy: 76% disapprove of his handling of cost of living,his approval on inflation is 27%,and his economy rating has dropped as the Feb. 22 poll. It contrasts this with how strong economic approval has previously been credited with helping drive Trump\u2019s 2024 election win.<\/p>\n<p>In foreign policy, Trump described \u201cProject freedom\u201d on Truth Social, saying the U.S.will help guide stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz as a humanitarian effort, shortly after Iran offered a new peace proposal. Trump <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/4553042\/trump-says-project-freedom-help-innocent-ships-in-strait-of-hormuz\/\">said on Sunday<\/a> on Truth Social that the U.S. will help guide stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz in a \u201chumanitarian gesture\u201d called \u201cProject Freedom,\u201d one day after <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/4552657\/trump-latest-iran-proposal-says-wont-accept\/\">receiving a new peace proposal<\/a> from Iran. The conflict started just over two months ago on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Trump\u2019s ratings on the cost of living, the economy, and inflation have also declined significantly since the most recent poll. 76% of respondents \u201cdisapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling the cost of living in the U.S.\u201d His approval rating on inflation is 27%, and his rating on the economy has decreased by seven percentage points since Feb. 22.<\/p>\n<p>When this same question was asked about the economy ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, Republicans had a double-digit advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >historically high approval rating<\/a> on the economy has been cited as a core reason for his victory in the 2024 presidential election. Former President Joe Biden\u2019s term saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-credits-his-rescue-plan-vaccine-campaign-as-unemployment-claims-hit-record-low\/\" title=\"Biden Credits His Rescue Plan, Vaccine Campaign As Unemployment Claims Hit Record Low\">record-breaking inflation<\/a>, with a peak of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3005344\/white-house-responds-biden-debunked-9-percent-inflation-claim\/\">9.1% in June 2022<\/a>, the highest since 1981.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of 2026, inflation held flat for two months at 2.4%, not far off from the Federal Reserve\u2019s 2% target. Inflation then increased to 3.3% in March, with higher <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4547316\/gas-prices-increase-of-20-cents-per-gallon-since-last-week\/\">gas prices<\/a> affecting consumers. Trump\u2019s tariff regime throughout his second term has also raised consumer prices.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201caffordability\u201d has plagued Republicans after tarrif-induced price increases were cited as a major reason why Democratic Govs. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) and Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) secured victories in the 2025 gubernatorial elections held last November.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4547563\/midterm-countdown-democrats-lead-gop-path-through\/\"><strong>MIDTERM COUNTDOWN: DEMOCRATS LEAD EARLY, BUT GOP SEES A PATH THROUGH THE MAP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When asked who they would favor if the election for the U.S. House of Representatives were held today, registered voters favored Democrats by 5 percentage points, 49% to 44%.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are also 21 percentage points more likely to say that \u201cvoting this fall is more important than previous midterms,\u201d casting doubt on the GOP\u2019s ability to deliver strong turnout from its base.
