And another in a taxpayer-funded university in Indiana. Gallego of Arizona introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/2495\/text\/is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keep Call Centers in America Act of 2025<\/a> in July of last year, aimed at making companies that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >relocate call centers overseas ineligible<\/a> for federal grants and loans.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2025, the late activist Charlie Kirk took to X <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/charliekirk11\/status\/1962662508684324966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saying<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica does not need more visas for people from India. Perhaps no form of legal immigration has so displaced American workers as those from India. Enough already. We\u2019re full. Let\u2019s finally put our own people first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the Trump administration has begun cracking down on H-1B visas, it doesn\u2019t touch the H-1B visa holders already here in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>These are non-U.S. citizens, many of whom have lied to get access to American tech positions, yet the system grants the tech industry access to the personal data of hundreds of millions of Americans; how are we making sure that this sensitive data does not end up in the hands of scammers in India?<\/p>\n<p>In February, a year-long, expanding FBI investigation found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2026\/02\/03\/indian-call-center-scams-montgomery-maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 650 victims<\/a> targeted by the same three call centers in India, losing over $48 million. The fraudsters posed as tech support workers, allowing them to gain access to victims\u2019 computers, or described themselves as American law enforcement as part of elaborate ruses.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, 31 percent of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2025\/07\/31\/online-scams-and-attacks-in-america-today\/#:~:text=According%20to%20our%20survey%2C%20a,the%20same%20for%20social%20media.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report receiving<\/a> at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tech-workers-left-hanging-as-sea-e-commerce-arm-shopee-rescinds-job-offers\/\" title=\"... workers left hanging as Sea e-commerce arm Shopee rescinds job offers\">scam call<\/a> a day, while 68 percent report receiving at least one a week. 73 percent of Americans have experienced some kind of online scam or attack, meaning this fraud and corruption issue could be the campaign issue of the year.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an issue stemming from a culture of fraud that has enabled elaborate Indian fraud markets, which have used American data to scam America\u2019s most vulnerable daily.<\/p>\n<p>The American people have become accustomed to Indian scams and, unfortunately, have been led to believe that this is just the new normal in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trans-model-named-as-one-of-glamours-women-of-the-year\/\" title=\"Trans model honored as Glamour&#039;s &#039;Woman of the Year\">tech era<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota Somali fraud unveiled a network taking advantage of government subsidies.\u00a0 But, the Indian fraud market goes much further by taking advantage of American systems and displacing Americans who have earned legitimate degrees.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a theft of opportunity from Americans with hard-earned certifications and a theft of the American economy.<\/p>\n<p>With the Trump administration pushing what is now being called \u2018Nations First\u2019 and a continuation of Western Hemisphere ideals \u2014 specifically that crime must be contained within a country\u2019s own borders rather than exporting into the United States \u2014 the issue of H-1B and Indian scams could be solved with the same principle: India should be solving this crime within its own borders first.<\/p>\n<p>What is needed is a two-step approach, passing the enforcement on India, while also simultaneously introducing legitimate congressional action.<\/p>\n<p>With midterms only months away, a crackdown on Indian fraud and scams could very well be an important 80-20 foreign policy issue for Republicans.<\/p>\n<p><em>Carla Sands is the former U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark.
