Golf course architect Tom Fazio is expected to lead the renovations, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.notus.org\/trump-white-house\/east-potomac-golf-course-takeover\"><em>NOTUS<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Trump is seeking donations for a new nonprofit organization that will fund the reconstruction of a section of Washington\u2019s waterfront, including the East Potomac Golf Course and a proposed National Garden of American Heroes.<\/p>\n<p>A document <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/05\/02\/trump-garden-golf-east-potomac-plans\">obtained<\/a> by the <em>Washington Post <\/em>was circulated to potential donors in recent weeks, which includes renderings of the East Potomac \u201creimagined\u201d as a championship golf course and a formal memorial space.<\/p>\n<p>None of the document\u2019s concepts are publicly approved, and any changes to the site would be subject to multiple layers of a federal review process that has not yet begun.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/interior-department\/\">Interior Department<\/a> terminated the 50-year lease held by the local nonprofit National Links Trust in December. The organization seeks to restore and preserve public golf courses, following its stewardship takeover in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>East Potomac Golf Links, along with Langston Golf Course and Rock Creek Park Golf, are all public courses, located on land owned by the federal government and managed by the NLS.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A golfer playing on the greens at East Potomac Park Golf Course in Washington, DC. (Matt McClain\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a statement, the National Links Trust took issue with the administration\u2019s conclusion that it had defaulted on its lease by failing to pay rent or come up with a credible plan to make improvements to the courses.<\/p>\n<p>NLS expressed \u201cdisagreement with the administration\u2019s characterization of NLT as being in default under the lease,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationallinkstrust.org\/whats-happening-now\">noting<\/a> their over $8.5 million investment in capital improvement projects at the courses.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the administration claimed its termination notice was because NLS didn\u2019t renovate the courses on time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNLT has consistently complied with all lease obligations as we work to ensure the brightest possible future for public golf in DC,\u201d the organization wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chris-van-hollen\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1944\">Chris Van Hollen<\/a> (D-MD) is one of four Democrats who addressed a public letter to Department of the Interior Secretary <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/doug-burgum\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"5973\">Doug Burgum<\/a> and the National Park Service\u2019s acting director, Jessica Brown, who are named as defendants in the lawsuit, stating that the administration illegally terminated the NLT\u2019s lease.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4515732\/trump-dc-construction-project-court\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4515732\/trump-dc-construction-project-court\/\">WHERE TRUMP\u2019S DC RECONSTRUCTION PROJECTS STAND IN COURT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has said little publicly about its plans for the courses, outside of Trump musing about taking over East Potomac, which is perched on the Potomac River and offers views of the Washington Monument. <\/p>\n<p>For a president with a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/real-estate\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1365\">real estate<\/a> portfolio and interest in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/golf\/\">golf<\/a>, the three public courses represent another set of desires from Trump to leave a more permanent mark in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>The NOTUS report of the Trump administration takeover came as a shock to NLS, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationallinkstrust.org\/whats-happening-now\">sharing Saturday morning<\/a> that the plans were \u201ca complete surprise to us,\u201d and that they \u201chope to have clarity as soon as possible for \u201cthe sake of [their] community and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DC Preservation League and two area residents <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/democracyforward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DC-Preservation-League-et.-al.-v.-Department-of-the-Interior-et.-al.pdf\">filed an injunction<\/a> in the U.S. District Court, challenging the Trump administration\u2019s takeover of East Potomac Golf Links in February. <\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lawsuits\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1641\">lawsuit<\/a> comes after 30,000 cubic yards of debris from the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/4544960\/congress-trump-white-house-ballroom-shooting\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4544960\">White House East Wing ballroom<\/a> demolition project were dumped onto the East Potomac grounds without explanation. (Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The plaintiffs argue that the administration\u2019s actions go against Congress\u2019s initial intent when it established the park in 1897 and declared it would be \u201cforever held and used as a park for the recreation and pleasure of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Donald J. Trump is fulfilling his commitment to make D.C. Safe and Beautiful as shown by record low crime rates and renovations to fountains across the capital,\u201d an Interior Department supervisor said <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/04\/13\/nx-s1-5759661\/trump-administration-threatens-to-take-over-3-public-golf-courses-in-dc\">in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conflicting accounts from the NOTUS report and NLS, at this time, offer uncertainty about the future of a lease at Rock Creek Park Golf or Langston Golf Course, with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationallinkstrust.org\/whats-happening-now\">NLS saying<\/a> it has \u201chad no interaction with anyone from the Department of the Interior or National Park Service on these matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-commanders\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"8771\">Washington Commanders\u2019<\/a> charitable foundation was reportedly approached by the administration as a potential operator, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2026\/05\/01\/langston-trump-commanders-golf\/\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Officials with the Interior Department apparently asked the NFL team\u2019s charitable foundation last month about overseeing Langston Golf Course in Northeast Washington, as the golf course is less than a mile from the team\u2019s future home at the former <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rfk-stadium\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11276\">RFK Stadium site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been asked to look at if we can play any role in the renovation of Langston Golf Course adjacent to the future home of RFK stadium and are studying the needs of this historic facility that has contributed so much to D.C.\u2019s golf history,\u201d said a team spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/sports\/4542494\/dc-host-2027-nfl-draft-national-mall-what-to-know\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/sports\/4542494\/dc-host-2027-nfl-draft-national-mall-what-to-know\/\">DC TO HOST 2027 NFL DRAFT ON NATIONAL MALL: WHAT TO KNOW<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The team is unlikely to take on the project as it falls far outside the charitable foundation\u2019s scope of work.
