Rich McCormick\u2019s \u201cMake DC Square Again\u201d proposal as non-serious political theater. The bill would fold Arlington and Alexandria-currently separate jurisdictions-back into the District of Columbia, changing the city\u2019s shape from an incomplete diamond to something closer to a slanted square.<\/p>\n<p>Hurtt argued it won\u2019t go anywhere in Congress or on ballots,saying it\u2019s mainly a platform-building stunt rather than governance. He also warned that advancing the act could open a \u201crisky pathway\u201d toward D.C. statehood, which he believes Republicans oppose. Rep. Don Beyer similarly condemned the legislation as an embarrassing, unconstitutional waste of time.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal was introduced after Virginia voters approved a redistricting referendum on April 21 that drastically shifted the state\u2019s House map from a 6-5 Democratic advantage to a 10-1 Democratic advantage. That <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >redistricting plan remains tied<\/a> up in legal challenges as the Virginia Supreme Court reviews its legality.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<article class=\"fn-body\">\n<p><strong>ARLINGTON, Virginia \u2014<\/strong> Arlington <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republicans\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"240\">Republicans<\/a> are rolling their eyes at the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4540019\/gop-congressman-add-arlington-alexandria-dc\/\">Make DC Square Again<\/a> Act. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/matthewhurtt\">Matthew Hurtt<\/a>, chairman of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/goparlington\">Arlington County Republican Committee<\/a>, made it clear he does not view the proposal to return Arlington to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc-2\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"13110\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, as a serious or viable policy idea.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4540019\/gop-congressman-add-arlington-alexandria-dc\/\">proposal<\/a>, introduced by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA), would reincorporate Arlington and Alexandria, two independent jurisdictions in northern Virginia, into the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\">District of Columbia<\/a>. If Arlington and Alexandria are added back, the district would look more like a slanted square, as the bill\u2019s title suggests. This is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/videos\/4522631\/spanberger-democrats-spending-virginia-redistricting\/\">political theater<\/a>, not governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenators want to be president, and congressmen want sound bites and clips to raise money,\u201d Hurtt said. \u201cThis is probably wildly popular outside the Beltway. \u2026 It\u2019s just not serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurtt also added that if the act passed, it could lead to D.C. statehood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very dangerous pathway to D.C. statehood, which I\u2019m certain all Republicans oppose,\u201d Hurtt warned. \u201cIt\u2019s a member of Congress looking for a platform, looking to raise money, and not seriously thinking about the consequences of what this legislation would realistically do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just Republicans against the idea. Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), who currently represents Virginia\u2019s 8th Congressional District encompassing Arlington and Alexandria, is fiercely opposed to the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRich McCormick\u2019s bill is an embarrassing legislative tantrum,\u201d Beyer said in a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cIt is also unconstitutional, and a stupid waste of time.
