Tartaglione told the paper that he found a small piece of yellow paper tucked inside a graphic novel after Epstein had been discovered unresponsive with red marks on his neck.Epstein later claimed Tartaglione attacked him, which Tartaglione denied, and Epstein was placed on suicide watch.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tartaglione, the note said: \u201cWhat do you want me to do, bust out crying? Time to say goodbye.\u201d The Times reports there is no copy of the note in the Justice Department\u2019s publicly available \u201cEpstein files,\u201d though a two-page Justice Department report records its existence. In that report, Tartaglione said he tried to retrieve the note but was refused by a guard, then gave it to another lawyer later that day. Lawyers attempted to authenticate the note twice over the following days, with authentication occurring in late 2019 or early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The note is reportedly being kept in a vault at a New York courthouse, and the Times sought to have it unsealed. A DOJ spokesperson said the agency had not seen the note. Epstein was ultimately placed on suicide watch.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Sometime in the four days after the possible suicide attempt on July 23, Tartaglione discovered the piece of yellow paper tucked inside a graphic novel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opened the book to read and there it was,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The purported suicide note, according to Tartaglione, read: \u201cWhat do you want me to do, bust out crying? Time to say goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> says there is no copy of the note found in the publicly available <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/epstein-files\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"17582\">Epstein files<\/a> on the Justice Department\u2019s website. But there is a record of its existence in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/epstein\/files\/DataSet%208\/EFTA00018224.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/epstein\/files\/DataSet%208\/EFTA00018224.pdf\">two-page report<\/a> chronicling events before and after Epstein\u2019s death on Aug. 10, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In the report, Tartaglione told his lawyer about finding the note. He tried retrieving the note from his jail cell, but a prison guard said no. The lawyer then instructed his client to give the note to another lawyer who arrived later that day.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers unsuccessfully tried to authenticate the note twice in the coming days.
