GOP Secretary of State Nancy Landry said early voting would proceed for other offices, with those additional races starting May 2.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Jeff Landry paused House primaries after the 2024 map drew a second majority-Black district and shifted one House seat to Democrats. Six House seats will remain on the ballot, but ballots for those contests will not be counted. Five incumbents are affected, including Reps. Steve Scalise, Troy Carter, Clay Higgins, Mike Johnson, and Cleo Fields, and Louisiana\u2019s 5th District is also open following Julia Letlow\u2019s decision to seek a primary rather than Cassidy\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p>Republican leaders in the state House and Senate said they will draft new congressional district proposals to comply with the Supreme Court decision during the current legislative session, which runs from March 9 to june. A voting rights advocate expects at least one majority-Black district to remain, while <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >noting potential political backfiring<\/a> if Democrats lose both seats. Warnock for Spreading Lies About Voter Suppression in Georgia\">early voting beginning<\/a> on Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-jetpack-image-compare\">\n<div class=\"juxtapose\" data-mode=\"horizontal\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The state\u2019s primary was thrown into chaos after the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/news\/supreme-court\/\" type=\"category\" id=\"11310\">Supreme Court<\/a> ruled that the state\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4410470\/supreme-court-strikes-down-race-based-redistricting-map-in-louisiana\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4410470\">congressional map<\/a>, drawn in 2024, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. The 2024 map created a second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/as-republican-julia-letlow-is-sworn-in-the-democrats-margin-in-the-house-shrinks-to-just-2-votes\/\" title=\"As Republican Julia Letlow Is Sworn In, The ...\u2019 Margin In The ... Shrinks To Just 2 Votes\">majority-black district<\/a>, where previously there had only been one. The redraw netted Democrats one House seat.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4548431\/supreme-court-louisiana-redistricting-ruling-democrats-south\/\">SUPREME COURT\u2019S LOUISIANA REDISTRICTING RULING POISED TO WIPE OUT HOUSE DEMOCRATS IN THE SOUTH<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>In light of the ruling, Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) put all <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/4549082\/louisiana-governor-suspend-primary-election\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/4549082\/louisiana-governor-suspend-primary-election\/\">primary elections<\/a> on hold. That move was later clarified to stipulate that only House elections would be paused, but primaries for the U.S. Senate and state offices would proceed. Early voting for those other races will begin on May 2. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllowing elections to proceed under an unconstitutional map would undermine the integrity of our system and violate the rights of our voters,\u201d said the governor. <\/p>\n<p>The last-minute change, however, is likely to confuse some voters. The House races will remain on the ballot; however, the votes tallied will not count, according to the secretary of state.  <\/p>\n<p>Five incumbents are up for reelection in the races affected, including Reps. Steve Scalise (R), Troy Carter (D), Clay Higgins (R), Mike Johnson (R), and Cleo Fields (D). The state\u2019s 5th Congressional District is open after Rep. Julia Letlow (R) opted to primary Sen. Bill Cassidy (R). <\/p>\n<p>Louisiana state House Speaker Phillip DeVillier and state Senate President Cameron Henry, both Republicans, said they will be working on new proposals to \u201cbring our congressional district maps in line with the Supreme Court\u2019s decision,\u201d and will reschedule the House primaries.<\/p>\n<p>DeVillier and Henry said they expect to pass new maps in the current legislative session, which began March 9 and will conclude in June. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that we have the bills available in the current session to accomplish that work within the remaining month of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/abbott-announces-second-legislative-session-to-pass-election-reform-bill-after-democrats-fled-the-state\/\" title=\"Abbott Announces Second Legislative Session To Pass Election Reform Bill After ...
