The decision may now affect redistricting in other states, including Mississippi.

After the ruling, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves called for a special legislative session, with reporting indicating the legislature could vote in mid-May to adopt the same redistricting map it had approved in 2022. That map had been created after a federal court found Mississippi’s prior maps violated the Voting rights Act by diluting Black voting power, leading to the addition of new majority-Black state Senate and House districts and changes to the state’s U.S. House districts.

The article also notes that Mississippi’s second congressional district-held by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson-could potentially be redrawn into more compact districts. In addition,it references developments in Florida that may increase Republican congressional representation, and it argues that the Supreme Court’s reasoning could give Republican-controlled legislatures more flexibility to draw competitive districts.

The Supreme Court’s decision Wednesday to throw out Louisiana’s two racially drawn congressional districts may mean Mississippi’s legislative maps are about to change, too.

The result could be a return to a super Republican majority in the state legislature and an additional U.S. House seat for the GOP.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 did not require Louisiana to create a <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/as-republican-julia-letlow-is-sworn-in-the-democrats-margin-in-the-house-shrinks-to-just-2-votes/" title="As ...
