Jeff Landry suspended Louisiana\u2019s scheduled May 16 congressional primary after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state\u2019s 2024 congressional map. The Court ruled 6-3 that the plan\u2019s second majority-Black district-the 6th Congressional District held by Rep. Cleo Fields-was a racial gerrymander under section 2 of the voting Rights Act, wich limits maps that rely on minority voting strength. landry and attorney General Liz Murrill said the state is enjoined from using the current map and is working with the Legislature and the Secretary of State to develop a new path forward.  <\/p>\n<p>Early voting was set to begin Saturday,and the primary date had already been pushed back in anticipation of the ruling.The decision could put Fields at risk of losing her seat if the Legislature redraws districts, and it may affect other representatives as well, while Sen. Troy Carter (D-LA) could also be in trouble in the 2nd Congressional District, though his <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >district remained largely unchanged<\/a> from the 2022 to 2024 maps.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4548774\/louisiana-legislature-redistricting-map-primaries\/\">LOUISIANA VOTERS LEFT IN LIMBO AS LEGISLATURE DEBATES NEXT MOVE AFTER MAP STRUCK DOWN<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>State legislative officials told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that the House speaker and Senate president were in conversations with the executive branch immediately following the ruling to determine a plan of action for congressional maps ahead of the election.<\/p>\n<p>In Louisiana, the state legislature is in charge of redrawing districts, which are subject to the governor\u2019s veto. The map created in 2022 after the 2020 census was ruled unconstitutional because it did not adequately take into account the state\u2019s black population.
