After the war began, the currency had held up, but starting April 27 demand for foreign banknotes spiked, and the rial started a sharp decline-dropping about 15% over two days to roughly 1.81 million rials per U.S. dollar.  <\/p>\n<p>The rial had already lost around 70% of its value against the dollar last year,and the devaluation is being driven by very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-reasons-making-taxpayers-pay-off-student-loans-is-a-rotten-idea\/\" title=\"5 Reasons Making Taxpayers Pay Off Student Loans Is A Rotten Idea\">high inflation<\/a>. The U.S. naval blockade has prevented Iran from acquiring foreign currency through exports, leading the rial to enter a precipitous decline after already faring poorly last year. Gholamhossein Mohammadi, an official at Iran\u2019s Labor and Social Affairs ministry, said that 1 million Iranians have been put directly out of work since the war began, and another 1 million have been put out of work indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving is not affordable anymore,\u201d\u00a0Mahdi Ghodsi,\u00a0of the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies, told the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>. \u201cIran is at its weakest point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4491652\/iran-finance-death-blow-war\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4491652\/iran-finance-death-blow-war\/\">IRAN FACES DEATH BLOW BECAUSE OF WAR<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currency devaluation and inflation triggered the December protests that culminated in Tehran\u2019s brutal crackdown in January, during which international watchdogs say tens of thousands of peaceful protesters were killed. The economy is now much worse than when the protests began, raising the possibility of new protests.<\/p>\n<p>Research Fellow and Middle East expert <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hudson.org\/experts\/1467-zineb-riboua\">Zineb Riboua<\/a>, at the Hudson Institute, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4491652\/iran-finance-death-blow-war\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4491652\/iran-finance-death-blow-war\/\">told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> in mid-March that several indicators suggested Iran\u2019s economy was in a death spiral. She noted that the rial appreciated by 13% at the time, indicating the central bank is drawing down reserves or assets were being mobilized through back channels.
