Some conservative senators argue Democrats oppose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poll-78-of-american-voters-favor-stronger-voter-id-laws\/\" title=\"POLL: 78% Of American Voters Favor Stronger Voter ID Laws\">voter integrity measures<\/a> for hypocritical reasons,while centrist and skeptical Republicans say the lack of a realistic path to passage has been overstated.  <\/p>\n<p>Thune has said they will \u201cpivot off\u201d the bill and consider it later,and while prominent GOP figures insist the fight isn\u2019t over and Trump continues calling for Republican support,others-like **Sen. Vulnerable members are insulated from casting a difficult vote to alter the filibuster and approve the House-passed measure, yet Republicans still used more than a month of floor debate ahead of the midterm elections to spotlight a component of President Donald Trump\u2019s agenda that invigorates conservative members and the party\u2019s voting base.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>\u201cI think that was by design. But putting it on the floor was not without value,\u201d said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who\u2019s advocated nixing the 60-vote threshold to pass it. \u201cWe were able to show Democrats are complete hypocrites in terms of being opposed to any form of voter integrity measures. So that was valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats last month <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1192\/vote_119_2_00073.htm\">rejected a stand-alone measure<\/a> to require photo ID for voting.<\/p>\n<p>Retiring Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), a centrist critical of the legislation, took a victory lap for keeping the bill at bay and preserving the filibuster while panning those he called \u201cdisingenuous\u201d for \u201ctelling people that there was ever a path.\u201d Thune has \u201cdone a great job of letting members really drive this issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could they have gotten out of it? Fundraising, I guess,\u201d Tillis continued. \u201cYou ought to go back and take a look at how many fundraising appeals they did that said, \u2018I\u2019m a true conservative fighting for you at the expense of other conservatives.\u2019 I don\u2019t like conservatives that start circular firing squads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune conceded last week the Senate would \u201cpivot off\u201d from the SAVE Act for \u201cpressing issues\u201d like the immigration funding and renewing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, before it expires at the end of the month. Shortly before advancing the immigration measure via a party-line process known as budget reconciliation, four Republicans \u2014 Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Tillis \u2014 sided with Democrats to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1192\/vote_119_2_00096.htm\">reject an amendment<\/a> that would have included the SAVE Act\u2019s major provisions.<\/p>\n<p>Thune has made no commitment to hold a vote to return to the bill, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and a federal standard for presenting IDs at polling locations, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll look for an opportunity to get back on it at the appropriate time,\u201d Thune recently told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans driving the SAVE Act push in the Senate, particularly Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rick Scott (R-FL), vow that the fight isn\u2019t over. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and conservative influencers online such as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4523078\/scott-presler-fuels-gop-save-america-act-standoff\/\">Scott Presler<\/a>. Scott was adamant that persistent public pressure would make further consideration for the measure unescapable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI take leadership with their word that they were \u2014 they\u2019re going to \u2014 put the effort into trying to get it passed,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI\u2019m going to keep working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/4501944\/senate-gop-balks-reconciliation-pass-save-america-act\/\">SENATE GOP BALKS AT USING RECONCILIATION TO PASS SAVE AMERICA ACT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Johnson, who often sides with Scott and Lee on contentious policy issues that can cause friction with their conservative colleagues, appeared ready to concede defeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis really isn\u2019t the leadership\u2019s call here,\u201d said Johnson, referring to the lack of support to nuke the legislative filibuster with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blackburn-introduces-amendments-to-counter-china-and-iran\/\" title=\"Blackburn Introduces Amendments to Counter China and Iran\">simple majority vote<\/a>.\u00a0\u201c[Thune] doesn\u2019t want to expose members to that, apparently.
