Tim Walz (D-MN) did not appear at a House oversight hearing on Tuesday about fraud in the state’s taxpayer-funded childcare programs, and lawmakers said they tried reaching him for more than a month. They met anyway to discuss allegations involving federally subsidized Child Care Assistance Programs, including service providers searched that morning in Minneapolis as part of a broader federal fraud examination. Committee Republicans criticized Walz’s handling of the issue, pointing to prior audits and legislative auditor reports from 2019 and saying the investigation and alleged abuse have continued for years.

The article also notes ongoing political tension: Walz reportedly declined the committee’s invitation despite being at the state Capitol, while he pushed back on related impeachment efforts and dismissed claims that lawmakers were trying to oust him instead of doing work. Walz later claimed credit for the Tuesday raids, saying state oversight referrals led to action, which drew a response from FBI Director Kash Patel, who said federal, DOJ, and DHS partners drafted and executed the warrants.

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) was a no-show at a Minnesota House oversight hearing on Tuesday about how his administration is actively combating fraud in the state’s taxpayer-funded childcare services, notably declining to testify on the same day that the FBI raided nearly two dozen facilities in Minneapolis, including daycares, suspected of stealing federal public assistance funds.

Lawmakers on the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Policy Committee noted that they reached out to Walz more than a month ago, followed up multiple times, and that he had his “pick of dates” to choose from.

Recommended Stories

FBI raids nearly two dozen Minneapolis facilities as part of sweeping fraud investigation

Is Secret Service to blame for White House dinner shooting chaos?

WHCA dinner suspect tied to left-wing activist group the Wide Awakes

“This is incredibly frustrating,” said Minnesota state Rep.
