Trump argued the attack \u201cwould have\u201d been avoided if the event had been held in the proposed ballroom, which he said will include a military bunker and can\u2019t be built quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for the preservation group, Gregory Craig, disputed that claim, saying the lawsuit does not endanger the President\u2019s safety. The DOJ urged dismissal and warned the group that the injunction could be dissolved and the case dismissed, calling the suit a baseless \u201caesthetic\u201d complaint. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche echoed that criticism,arguing the delay is unjustified.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting occurred at the Washington Hilton ballroom on Saturday after the suspect allegedly breached a security checkpoint and shot a Secret Service agent outside the main event area; the agent was not seriously injured. The accused, Cole Allen, was arrested and is set to be arraigned.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute began in March, when a federal judge <a representing the preservation group, said that Trump\u2019s assessment of the incident on Saturday is inaccurate, adding that the lawsuit does not put the president\u2019s safety in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>\u201cYour assertion that this lawsuit put the President\u2019s life at \u2018grave risk\u2019 is incorrect and irresponsible,\u201d Craig wrote in a letter first reported by the <em>Washington Post<\/em>. \u201cSimply put, this case does not jeopardize the President\u2019s safety in any way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Craig\u2019s letter is in response to one sent by the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-justice\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"438\">Department of Justice<\/a>, urging the group to drop its lawsuit and allow ballroom construction to resume. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" the cost,\u201d Civil Division Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DAGToddBlanche\/status\/2048484273720607005\">wrote in a letter<\/a> to Craig. \u201cEnough is enough. Your client should voluntarily dismiss this frivolous lawsuit today in light of last night\u2019s assassination attempt on President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shumate had given Craig until 9 a.m. Monday to drop the case, or face action from the DOJ to \u201cdissolve the injunction and dismiss the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acting Attorney General <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/todd-blanche\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"20883\">Todd Blanche<\/a> shared Shumate\u2019s letter and ripped the lawsuit as one of \u201caesthetic gripe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis lawsuit is on behalf of a single person who walks in the vicinity of the White House once a month and expects to dislike the East Wing\u2019s new design,\u201d Blanche said. \u201cThe passing aesthetic gripe of a single person cannot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-calls-on-national-trust-to-drop-lawsuit-against-trump-ballroom\/\" title=\"... calls on ... to drop ... against ... ...\">possibly justify delaying<\/a> the construction of a secure facility for the President to do his job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shooting took place at the Washington Hilton ballroom on Saturday when the alleged gunman charged a security checkpoint and shot a Secret Service agent in the lobby of the hotel, just outside of the main room where Trump, his Cabinet members, their families, and thousands of journalists were gathered for the annual dinner. The agent was not seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Allen, was taken into custody as authorities investigate the incident and is set to be arraigned on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Shumate, in his letter, emphasized the importance of the ballroom in that it will ensure \u201cPresident Trump and his successors will no longer need to venture beyond the safety of the White House perimeter to attend large gatherings at the Washington Hilton ballroom,\u201d which he said is \u201cdemonstrably unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unlikely the event would have been held in the White House ballroom if it had been built by then.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, brought on by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, started in March, when District Judge Richard Leon, an appointee of President George W.
