In a recent CBS “60 Minutes” interview, he reflects on how politics often elevates office titles, while his illness has drawn him toward more personal, human commitments-being a dad or mom, a lover, neighbor, and friend.

Responding to interviewer Scott Pelley’s point that many senators seem unwilling to leave their roles, Sasse warns that putting the job above everything else can signal a deeper problem. He also argues that U.S. political debate is missing key issues-especially the changing nature of work driven by technology and artificial intelligence-and says Congress doesn’t even know how to have those necessary conversations. he suggests political energy should originate from local, grassroots communities rather then from Washington, calling national dysfunction an echo of broader community weaknesses.

As he daily brushes shoulders with death, former Republican Sen.
