The idea had been floated following reports of Kirby raising the concept in a private meeting in late February, with critics arguing the combination would further reduce competition in an already consolidated industry, cut routes, and raise fares.<\/p>\n<p>Kirby said he still believes the merger could have benefited customers, employees, and communities, but American rejected the offer and would not engage. american likewise said it was not interested in discussions and that antitrust concerns made the deal a \u201cnonstarter.\u201d Supporters of the merger argued that combining United and American would help the U.S. airlines compete more effectively with foreign carriers on international routes. I was confident that this combination, which would have been about adding and not subtracting, creating a truly great airline that customers love, could get regulatory approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hoping to pitch that story to American, but they declined to engage and instead responded by publicly closing the door,\u201d the executive added. \u201cAnd without a willing partner, something this big simply can\u2019t get done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>American declined to comment on Kirby\u2019s statement, but the airline <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/news.aa.com\/news\/news-details\/2026\/Statement-from-American-Airlines-CORP-OTH-04\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/news.aa.com\/news\/news-details\/2026\/Statement-from-American-Airlines-CORP-OTH-04\/\">previously said<\/a> it was \u201cnot engaged with or interested in any discussions\u201d about the merger.<\/p>\n<p>American CEO Robert Isom also rebuffed the merger last week, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/04\/23\/american-airlines-ceo-robert-isom-on-potential-united-merger-a-nonstarter-from-the-get-go.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/04\/23\/american-airlines-ceo-robert-isom-on-potential-united-merger-a-nonstarter-from-the-get-go.html\">telling CNBC<\/a> that it \u201cwas a nonstarter from the get-go\u201d based on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antitrust\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1187\">antitrust<\/a> concerns.
