In Clinton Whistleblower Linda Tripp\">pancreatic cancer<\/a> that has spread to multiple parts of his body, attributing his extended time to \u201cprovidence, prayer, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/coffee-medicine-for-the-body-and-soul\/\" title=\"Coffee: Medicine for the Body and Soul\">miracle drug<\/a>.\u201d He discussed his terminal diagnosis in a recent 60 Minutes interview, noting doctors initially gave him only about three to four months to live, and that he\u2019s already gone beyond that window.<\/p>\n<p>Sasse credits a clinical trial drug-Daraxonrasib-for reducing his tumor volume and lowering his pain. I am on extended time already,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/former-sen-ben-sasse-cancer-reflects-on-family-faith-and-future-of-america-60-minutes-transcript\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/former-sen-ben-sasse-cancer-reflects-on-family-faith-and-future-of-america-60-minutes-transcript\/\">Sasse said in the interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Sasse thanked God and the clinical trial he is in for a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/4524599\/ben-sasse-cancer-treatment-causing-face-bleed\/\">breakthrough cancer drug<\/a> called Daraxonrasib for his extended time with his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have much, much less pain than I had four months ago when I was diagnosed, and I have a massive 76% reduction in tumor volume over the last four months,\u201d Sasse said.<\/p>\n<p>Daraxonrasib <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/pancan.org\/news\/first-ras-inhibitor-extends-survival-in-previously-treated-metastatic-pancreatic-adenocarcinoma-what-you-need-to-know\/\">works by<\/a> inhibiting the activity of RAS proteins, which are cell growth regulators that can cause constant cancer cell proliferation when mutated. The clinical trial drug blocks the signaling pathways through which these proteins grow.<\/p>\n<p>In a mid-April press release, the company conducting clinical trials of Daraxonrasib, called Revolution Medicines, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.revmed.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/daraxonrasib-demonstrates-unprecedented-overall-survival-benefit\">announced<\/a> that the drug produces a median overall survival of 13.2 months. This is nearly double the median overall survival for chemotherapy, pinged at 6.7 months.<\/p>\n<p>Sasse is currently battling pancreatic cancer that has metastasized to lung, vascular, liver, and other cancers. He has five types.<\/p>\n<p>In a discussion about how his faith intertwines with his health, Sasse told <em>60 Minutes<\/em> that although \u201cdeath is evil,\u201d he has taken some positives out of his terminal diagnosis, maintaining that the fact he was diagnosed with cancer is \u201cpretty small on the grand scheme of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s a touch of grace because it forces me to tell the truth. And the lie I wanna tell myself is that I\u2019m the center of everything. And I\u2019m gonna be around forever. And I can work harder and store up enough that I can atone for my own brokenness. I can\u2019t. And so, I hate cancer. But I\u2019m also grateful for it,\u201d Sasse said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell a lot more truth to myself than I used to do it when I thought I was super omni-competent and interesting,\u201d Sasse continued. <\/p>\n<p>Sasse, who stepped down from his second term in the Senate to go back to leading universities, also reflected on how his diagnosis has made him think differently about Capitol Hill. He told the outlet that \u201cCongress is not wrestling with big or important questions right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He argued that Congress should be focusing on how the digital revolution in the age of artificial intelligence will disrupt our workforce in the coming decades. And Congress doesn\u2019t talk about any of those kind of most fundamental issues,\u201d Sasse said.<\/p>\n<p>Sasse stepped back from his presidency role at the University of Florida in 2024 after his wife\u2019s epilepsy diagnosis.
