International travel also plays a factor in this hypothetical scenario in which the two leading U.S. airlines would be better equipped to compete with foreign carriers on overseas flights.<\/p>\n<p>However, the benefits do not outweigh the risks when the combined entity would account for 33%-40% of the domestic <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/air-travel\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"160\">air travel<\/a> market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my view, it would face nearly insurmountable antitrust hurdles even under a deal-friendly administration,\u201d Parsons said. \u201cIt may be that the \u2018true\u2019 target is JetBlue.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-case-for-jetblue\">The case for JetBlue<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Rico Merkert, a professor at the University of Sydney\u2019s Business School, concurs that JetBlue may be in a more prime position to join forces with another airline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf history is of any guidance and if the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >current jet fuel crisis due<\/a> to the events around the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/strait-of-hormuz\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"21488\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> is not resolved swiftly, JetBlue could be in play for some M&#038;A activity in search of options due to profitability pressures,\u201d he told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>JetBlue is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/03\/25\/2026\/jetblue-explores-potential-merger-partners\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/03\/25\/2026\/jetblue-explores-potential-merger-partners\">reportedly exploring<\/a> merger options with United, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.<\/p>\n<p>Merkert said mergers between large U.S. carriers have historically been approved to avoid Chapter 11 bankruptcy for one of the merging companies, although that wasn\u2019t the result for Spirit Airlines.<\/p>\n<p>Spirit is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/travel\/4533527\/spirit-airlines-future-uncertain-bankruptcy-pressures-mount\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/travel\/4533527\/spirit-airlines-future-uncertain-bankruptcy-pressures-mount\/\">currently navigating<\/a> the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process after its proposed merger with JetBlue failed on antitrust grounds in 2024 due to the anti-monopoly <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/biden-administration\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"445\">Biden administration<\/a>. Spirit has been trying to recover since then.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the president\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/business\/4541709\/spirit-airlines-trump\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/business\/4541709\/spirit-airlines-trump\/\">recent comments<\/a>, it looks increasingly likely that the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/trump-administration\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"339\">Trump administration<\/a> will step in to bail out the struggling low-cost airline with a $500 million loan. Negotiations are reportedly underway for a federal solution to save the bankrupt carrier.<\/p>\n<p>JetBlue is not facing immediate bankruptcy yet, but its business is being threatened by surging fuel costs due to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iran\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"100\">Iran<\/a> war, as is the case with other airlines. Last month, JetBlue raised its checked bag fees to counteract the economic pressures stemming from the military conflict.<\/p>\n<p>JetBlue \u201cmay be forced to merge with another carrier,\u201d Merkert said, if higher inflation causes an increase in interest rates. Or as Merkert put it, \u201cTwo wrongs don\u2019t make a right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA counter-balance merger doesn\u2019t automatically fix the competition loss from the first,\u201d he said. \u201cIf anything, two mega-deals could push concentration even higher \u2014 making approval harder, not easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/atr\/herfindahl-hirschman-index\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/atr\/herfindahl-hirschman-index\">HHI<\/a>, used to measure market concentration, indicates that the domestic airline market has a score of over 2,000 points. The Department of Justice considers any market that exceeds 1,800 points to be highly concentrated. Combined airlines with larger market shares, such as United-American, would push the HHI score to an unprecedented limit.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the extreme antitrust risks, the United-American proposition has little to no chance of passing the regulatory process. Not to mention American is opposed to the long-shot deal itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican\u2019s got a strong business plan, and I just want to say that merging the world\u2019s two largest airlines together, that was a nonstarter from the get-go,\u201d Isom <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/04\/23\/american-airlines-ceo-robert-isom-on-potential-united-merger-a-nonstarter-from-the-get-go.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/04\/23\/american-airlines-ceo-robert-isom-on-potential-united-merger-a-nonstarter-from-the-get-go.html\">told CNBC<\/a>. \u201cWe take any inquiry seriously, but at the end of the day, there\u2019s no way to view that as anything but anticompetitive, bad for customers, ultimately bad for American Airlines, bad for our team. So we\u2019re not pursuing any talks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-united-have-its-eyes-on-jetblue\">Does United have its eyes on JetBlue?<\/h2>\n<p>Some aviation industry experts speculate that Kirby proposed the merger to get back at American for effectively firing him in 2016. At the time, Kirby served as American\u2019s president. On the same day that he was replaced by Isom at American, United announced its hiring of Kirby as president. Less than four years later, Kirby became the United CEO.<\/p>\n<p>While there is an element of personal drama there, Parsons believes that didn\u2019t motivate Kirby to propose the merger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirby is known for being a data-driven strategist,\u201d the economics professor said. \u201cIf he is floating this, it is more likely an attempt to test the regulatory temperature. He likely has his eye on another airline that would create less regulatory scrutiny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JetBlue would likely fit the bill. It\u2019s probable the carrier could secure approval from federal regulators, considering it only takes up about 5% of the domestic airline market.
