She was eventually cleared to return to work and reached a settlement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-weigh-defunding-planned-parenthood-with-trump-megabill\/\" title=\"Republicans weigh defunding Planned Parenthood with Trump megabill\">government health service<\/a>. the May 2024 incident at St Helier and Epsom University Hospitals involved a prisoner who appeared male and wished to discharge; after reviewing the patient\u2019s records, Melle referred to him as \u201cmister\u201d when he wanted to leave and did not use the patient\u2019s preferred female pronouns. The patient allegedly shouted at her to stop calling him mister, and when Melle, who is Black, maintained her stance, the patient responded with racial abuse. In October 2024 she received a written warning and was referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). After months of proceedings and a suspension that followed media interviews in March 2025, her disciplinary hearing was canceled in December of that year. The hospitals were also accused of a data breach for publicly commenting on the case. Conservative MP Claire Coutinho reportedly intervened. Melle was allowed to return to work in February 2026, ending ten months of suspension. Rather than going to a tribunal,the hospitals settled with her in mid-April 2026-the same day a tribunal had been scheduled to begin,according to Sky News.
