The New England Patriots, the reigning AFC champions facing the so-called “Super Bowl hangover,” would normally be fielding those kinds of questions. Instead, reporters are chasing a different story-one that already sidelined a veteran reporter and centers on Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. ESPN reported that the Patriots held a press conference not to discuss football, but to let Vrabel address the off-season scandal affecting the league.

The saga began publicly on April 7, when The New York Post’s Page Six published photos of Vrabel with former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini-both married-engaging in what appeared to be an intimate moment. Vrabel initially dismissed the pictures as a mischaracterization, calling the interaction innocent and saying it didn’t deserve further comment. However, the matter persisted, and Vrabel later offered a more tempered response, noting difficult conversations with family, the organization, coaches, and players, and stressing that success on and off the field depends on good decisions that start with him. He also said he did not want actions that distract the team and that certain questions would remain private. When pressed about whether the relationship was still “completely innocent” and “laughable,” he gave a cautious, non-committal answer, focusing on the football team.

As for Russini, she did not let the matter fade.
