The 19-page complaint targets a April 17, 2026 article titled “The FBI Director Is MIA,” which claimed Patel drank heavily and had unexplained absences, and it accuses the Atlantic of relying on unnamed sources and displaying clear bias and malice. Patel’s filing argues that the piece was false, not corroborated, and published despite warnings and information contradicting the allegations, listing at least 17 major claims that were allegedly false. The Atlantic has responded that it stands by its reporting and will vigorously defend against the lawsuit. The case adds to Patel’s history of legal action against media figures and outlets over coverage of his tenure.

FBI Director Kash Patel filed a defamation lawsuit on Monday against The Atlantic after it published an article last week claiming he has been drinking heavily and was frequently absent at work.

The 19-page lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and included the author of the piece, Sarah Fitzpatrick, as a defendant.

Patel is seeking $250 million in damages.

“Kashyap P. The suit targets an April 17, 2026 Atlantic article titled “The FBI Director Is MIA,” which claimed Patel drank heavily and was frequently absent from work. Patel’s filing argues the piece relied on unnamed, partisan sources and could not find anyone willing to defend the allegations; it accuses The Atlantic of publishing with actual malice despite warnings that the central claims were false and despite publicly available information that contradicted them.

The Atlantic responded to Patel’s lawsuit by reiterating that it stands by its reporting and will vigorously defend the publication and its journalists. Patel’s lawyers contend the outlet has a preexisting bias against him, pointing to prior coverage they say has depicted him as unqualified or unstable and arguing this constitutes a broader, ongoing editorial campaign to damage his reputation. The complaint notes that before the current article, The Atlantic had signaled an editorial predisposition that Patel’s tenure could fail, and it argues that many of the article’s 17 major claims are flawed. Specific allegations about Patel’s drinking (including claims of drinking to excess at a Las Vegas venue and other cited episodes) and related claims about meeting reschedules and security concerns were disputed by Patel’s side in the filing.

The lawsuit also mentions that Patel had previously sued MSNBC contributor Frank Figliuzzi over similar claims, with that case pending in the Southern District of Texas. The Atlantic’s official response to the suit was shared via X (Twitter), affirming their confidence in their reporting.

If you’d like, I can also provide a shorter one-paragraph summary or a more detailed, line-by-line paraphrase

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-04-20T143133.193.jpg
[33651
74889,4585,78143
post-2592929","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-kashpatel","tag-lawsuit","tag-theatlantic
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-04-20T143133.193.jpg
["GET
