The order, which was not part of his campaign platform, banned prosecutors from filing enhancements and required they be withdrawn from pending matters. A public outcry helped persuade Gasc\u00f3n to re-evaluate that directive and swiftly reinstated the use of some enhancements for cases involving \u201cthe most vulnerable\u201d victims. Still, there are more than 100 enhancements in California\u2019s penal code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnhancements are no longer sought in most cases as research suggests that excessive sentences don\u2019t enhance safety but do exasperate recidivism, leading to more victims of crime,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said during the news conference.<\/p>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n cited statistics that compared his first three months in office to the same period last year, which he said showed a 71% reduction in enhancements filed. He said the drop eliminated \u201cover 8,000 years of unnecessary prison exposure time.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"15.92507204611\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Eliminated 8,127 years of unnecessary, excessive and expensive exposure to prison time. <\/p>\n<p>Stopped seeking the death penalty in 17 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Withdrew 77 pending motions to transfer kids to adult court.<\/p>\n<p>Saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>All during my first 100 days. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/I5XaIZveb7\">pic.twitter.com\/I5XaIZveb7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Gasc\u00f3n (@GeorgeGascon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeorgeGascon\/status\/1372990725994938369?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 19, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Taking a new approach to promote ending enhancements, Gasc\u00f3n claimed the strategy eased the burden on taxpayers, saying \u201ccost savings are projected to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LAist <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/latest\/post\/20210317\/los-angeles-da-george-gascon-in-3-months-cut-prison-sentences-8,000-years\">reported<\/a>, \u201cIf those defendants are convicted, their shorter sentences will save the state prisons $664 million, according to Gasc\u00f3n.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric Siddall, vice president of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys (ADDA), told The Daily Wire, \u201c(Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s) math is pure fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnhancements, for the most part, are only applicable to violent criminals,\u201d Siddall continued. \u201cWhat he is really saying is that he is no longer prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ADDA filed a lawsuit against Gasc\u00f3n, alleging he had ignored laws and placed prosecutors in an ethical dilemma. Last month, a judge issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/judge-issues-injunction-blocking-several-directives-from-l-a-countys-new-controversial-d-a\">preliminary injunction<\/a> ruling Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s sentence enhancement policy violated California\u2019s Three Strikes law, which Gasc\u00f3n had promised not to enforce if elected.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Gasc\u00f3n spotlighted his record of withdrawing 77 pending motions to transfer juveniles to adult court and establishing a Crime Victims Advisory Board to provide support during parole hearings instead of prosecutors. County Sheriff\u2019s Department, is an honorary co-chair of the recall group. She is also the widow of slain LASD Sgt. Steve Owen, who was murdered in the line of duty in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGasc\u00f3n has transformed Los Angeles County\u2019s top prosecutorial office into a public defender\u2019s office that prioritizes protecting criminals over victims,\u201d Owen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstelegram.com\/2021\/03\/17\/la-county-district-attorney-george-gascon-marks-100-days-in-office\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cGasc\u00f3n has made our most vulnerable communities less safe by eliminating sentencing enhancements for violent criminals, ending cash bail, and offering parole opportunities to cold-blooded murderers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>D.A. Gasc\u00f3n insists, \u201cwe are doing all of this because the science and data tells us to do so,\u201d adding, \u201cand together we can truly enhance public safety, increase equity, expand victims services, and strengthen police accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, several Gasc\u00f3n critics have questioned the validity of the research he often <a href=\"http:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/media\/news\/district-attorney-george-gascon-outlines-reforms-made-during-first-100-days-office-promises-more\">references<\/a>, alleging the findings tend to be more anecdotal than scientific and come from like-minded progressive organizations advocating for drastic systemic reforms.
