The piece notes her continued public criticism of legacy outlets and her claim that conservative outlets were at fault for not breaking the story sooner.

– The author ultimately contends that Allen-Ebrahimian’s own decisions and explanations are the core issue, framing her as a media figure who persisted in blaming others while she herself did not follow through.

– The article also situates her current role as head of China investigations at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), suggesting that despite the controversy, she remains a critically important figure in the field, while arguing that her conduct in this episode reflects more on her own choices than on external enemies.

– Throughout, the piece contrasts Allen-Ebrahimian’s experience with a broader pattern in which conservative media has been willing to scrutinize or advance stories that legacy outlets overlook, citing other high-profile cases to argue that the fault lies more in the author’s actions than in her critics.

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian has become one of the faces of the Eric Swalwell story. She’s not in the official Democratic Party apparatus, period. In fact, she started out being particularly congratulatory to herself about it.

See, Allen-Ebrahimian is one of the reporters who broke the story for Axios, in 2020, that Swalwell had been linked with a Chinese spy who was known to sexually target California politicians for information to pass along to Beijing.

While the reporters did not explicitly say so, the implication was that Swalwell — a candidate for president that cycle, in case you’ve forgotten — had slept with a spy and neglected to tell us. Early on, she seemed pleased with the attention she received and implied Swalwell’s alleged relationship with a spy was suggested by the reporting.
