President Donald Trump pressed House Republicans to extend the five-year reauthorization, but twelve Republicans joined Democrats in rejecting the deal. Moments later, a procedural vote to advance an 18-month reauthorization also failed, with twenty Republicans voting with most Democrats against it. Consequently, the House unanimously approved a 10-day extension of the deadline to reauthorize the program, allowing more time for negotiations and giving the Senate until roughly April 30 to act, if it agrees.

Civil-libertarian critics argue that FISA 702 violates the Fourth Amendment because it can yield information about U.S. persons without warrants, even though the program is intended to target foreigners. The article notes that U.S. officials acknowledge that a foreign target may unknowingly discuss information about a U.S. person. It highlights a split among republicans, including members of the House Intelligence committee who voted against the extension, such as Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Scott Perry, and former chairman Mike Turner, reflecting a broader tension between views on national security and civil liberties.

Public statements in the piece show Trump urging support for a robust extension, while House Speaker Mike Johnson framed the 10-day extension as a procedural step to secure a cleaner, more thoroughly considered renewal. The report also references reactions from outlets like The Hill and Punchbowl news, which described the vote as a challenge to the intelligence community and noted that those who opposed the five-year extension argued for stronger penalties for misuse and greater congressional access to FISA courts. Social media reactions and quotes from journalists further illustrate the political divides around FISA 702, while the extension remains contingent on Senate action.

President Donald Trump pleaded with House Republicans this week to extend a section of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

In the wee hours of Friday morning, a dozen GOP members voted with Democrats to reject the president’s plea.

According to The Hill, 12 Republicans joined with nearly all Democrats to defeat a deal — hammered out behind closed doors — that would have extended the federal government’s <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/rep-gaetz-leads-gop-effort-to-abolish-broad-surveillance-authority/" title="Rep. In the early hours, 12 GOP lawmakers voted with Democrats to reject that plea. The Hill reported that this group sided with almost all Democrats to defeat a closed-door deal that would have renewed warrantless surveillance powers for five more years. Shortly afterward, a procedural vote to advance an 18-month reauthorization of FISA Section 702 also failed, with 20 Republicans joining nearly all Democrats in opposition. Ultimately, the House approved a 10-day extension by unanimous consent, preventing the program from expiring on Monday. If the Senate signs off on Friday, Congress would have until April 30 to complete reauthorization.

– FISA Section 702 lets intelligence agencies surveil foreigners outside the United States without a target-specific warrant, with assistance from electronic communications providers. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence noted that a target under Section 702 could still communicate with or relay information about a U.S. person, which civil libertarians argue violates the Fourth Amendment’s protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

– The vote against the five-year reauthorization drew support from a diverse set of Republicans, including some who typically show deference to the intelligence community. In public remarks outside the Capitol, Rep. Thomas Massie (joined by Reps. Lauren Boebert and Tim Burchett) framed the vote as a victory against the “deep state.” Massie warned that the government could target individuals and revive evidence trails without admitting to using FISA.

– Punchbowl News highlighted that several Republicans voting against the five-year extension included current and former members of the House Intelligence Committee, such as Brian Fitzpatrick, Scott Perry, and former chairman Mike Turner. The outlet noted that the five-year extension would have strengthened penalties for misuse of the program and increased congressional access to FISA courts, concerns that hardliners in the intelligence community likely opposed. Trump, however, argued on social media that FISA 702 is essential for national security and praised its benefits to the military.

– House Speaker Mike Johnson framed the 10-day extension as part of the process, saying they were close and would get it done.
