gerrymandering scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The all but certain political move by the commonwealth&rsquo;s leftist governor was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2026\/april-releases\/name-1116400-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> Tuesday, when Spanberger revealed that she had sent the bills in question back to the Democrat-run General Assembly with amendments she claimed &ldquo;strengthen commonsense gun safety laws.&rdquo; Monday night was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtkr.com\/news\/politics\/gov-abigail-spanberger-faces-monday-deadline-to-act-on-virginia-bills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deadline<\/a> by which Spanberger had to decide whether to request such amendments, sign or veto legislation, or allow bills to become law without her signature. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1878198044\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among the bills Spanberger sought changes to are <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/bill-details\/20261\/HB217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB 217<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/bill-details\/20261\/SB749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SB 749<\/a>, which seek to ban the sale and purchase of so-called &ldquo;assault firearms&rdquo; (a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >semi-automatic center-fire rifle<\/a> or pistol&rdquo; with a &ldquo;fixed magazine capacity in excess of 15 rounds&rdquo; in Virginia.) The governor&rsquo;s office claimed Spanberger&rsquo;s sought-after amendments &ldquo;provide additional clarity to law enforcement as it relates to the firearms included under this legislation, as well as protect the use of certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/1-2-million-guns-sold-why-firearms-sales-keep-busting-records\/\" title=\"1.2 Million Guns Sold: Why Firearms Sales Keep Busting Records\">semi-automatic shotguns<\/a> used for hunting.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/politics\/capitol-connection\/trump-doj-lawsuit-threat-gun-bills-spanberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent a letter<\/a> to Spanberger prior to Monday&rsquo;s deadline warning that it is prepared to take legal action against the commonwealth should it enact bills like SB 749. The agency said that such legislation &ldquo;unconstitutionally limit[s] law-abiding Americans&rsquo; individual right to bear arms.&rdquo;  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"HwxDadC6i5JrAS\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Woah! Looks like there&#8217;s a small language change that actually makes any semi-auto that has a magazine capable of holding more than 15 rounds an &#8220;assault firearm.&#8221; This is actually a massive expansion of the definition. Also on the list was <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/bill-details\/20261\/HB702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB 702<\/a>, which authorizes localities to &ldquo;develop policies and procedures to implement either a firearm give-back program or a firearm buy-back program by January 1, 2028, and annually thereafter.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/20\/democrats-love-gun-control-and-violent-criminals-because-both-can-punish-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats Love Gun Control And Violent Criminals Because Both Can Punish You<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpm.org\/generalassembly\/2026-04-14\/abigail-spanberger-virginia-general-assembly-veto-day-deadline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR affiliate<\/a>, the General Assembly will consider whether to approve or reject Spanberger&rsquo;s amendment proposals during a one-day session on April 22. That&rsquo;s one day after the state&rsquo;s April 21 referendum that will decide the fate of Democrats&rsquo; radical gerrymandering amendment.<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist previously reported, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/02\/17\/va-supreme-courts-gerrymandering-charade-shows-how-the-judiciary-is-wrecking-its-credibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seemingly illegal amendment<\/a> temporarily abolishes the state&rsquo;s redistricting commission and permits the Democrat-run General Assembly to redraw Virginia&rsquo;s congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterms. The party&rsquo;s current proposal would gerrymander the commonwealth from a six Democrat-five Republican map to a 10 Democrat-one Republican map, which would effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/08\/virginia-democrats-power-grab-is-a-giant-middle-finger-to-rural-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disenfranchise<\/a>&nbsp;millions of rural Virginians.<\/p>\n<p>A Federalist analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/09\/analysis-more-than-90-percent-of-funds-backing-dems-gerrymandering-scheme-come-from-outside-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently found<\/a> that more than 90 percent of the funds given to the left-wing group pushing the amendment (&ldquo;Virginians for Fair Elections&rdquo;) have come from outside the state. Among the organization&rsquo;s biggest donors are the Hakeem Jeffries-tied House Majority Forward, the leftist Fairness Project, and the Soros-linked Fund for Policy Reform Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Spanberger&rsquo;s decision to punt on the aforementioned gun control bills comes amid the governor&rsquo;s tanking approval rating among Virginians. Despite having been in office less than four months, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-tim-ryan-the-real-deal-his-former-neighbors-dont-think-so\/\" title=\"Is Tim Ryan The Real Deal?
