When she heard a sharp, unfamiliar sound cut through the crowd, she reacted like a human being would.<\/p>\n<p>She said what millions of people would say if they heard something startling and completely out of place in a familiar environment.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s weird,&rdquo; she thought.<\/p>\n<p>And it was weird.<\/p>\n<p>Americans are told constantly that &ldquo;diversity is our strength.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But moments like this reveal that when you bring together people with vastly different customs, things may get uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>There will be confusion. There will be reactions that can&rsquo;t be pre-scripted.<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter didn&rsquo;t attack anyone or insult a group of people. She was understandably disturbed by a sound that many Americans would consider menacing or disruptive, or might associate with terror.<\/p>\n<p>She reacted to a sound she didn&rsquo;t recognize and said she didn&rsquo;t like it.
