Adam Schiff, withdrew his endorsement and called for Swalwell to suspend his candidacy.

– The coverage included tweets and statements from political figures, including Schiff, along with reactions on social media.

– Swalwell released a late-night denial video in which he said the allegations were false and addressed past “mistakes in judgment,” but the piece suggests the response was a weak, non-denial and criticized it as incongruent with his past stance on believing survivors.

– The article frames questions about credibility by contrasting Swalwell’s defenses with past positions on other high-profile allegations (notably Brett Kavanaugh) and discusses the potential political implications for Swalwell’s race, suggesting the Democratic field could be affected and mentioning other possible candidates like Katie Porter and Tom Steyer.

– the piece argues that multiple, credible, recent allegations exist against Swalwell, complicating his denial and posing a notable political challenge, while also highlighting the broader media and political surroundings surrounding the disclosures.

Friday was a very bad day for California gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. The week had already been rough, with rumors that more sexual-misconduct allegations could surface and claims that some women hadn’t come forward because they’d signed non-disclosure agreements. Swalwell’s team dismissed the charges as false, outrageous smears and insisted no NDAs had been signed. But subsequent reporting intensified the controversy. The San Francisco Chronicle published a piece in which a former aide accused Swalwell of sexually abusing her on multiple occasions when she was intoxicated, with corroborating evidence. CNN published additional accounts from other women with similarly substantiated claims. Politico then reported that at least one staffer had signed an NDA to settle an employment-discrimination claim, undermining Swalwell’s denial of NDAs.

Across the Democratic ranks, many officials and organizations sought distance from Swalwell, including his longtime ally in California politics, Sen. Adam Schiff, who publicly withdrew his endorsement and called on Swalwell to exit the race. Swalwell issued a late-night denial video, arguing that the allegations are flatly false and suggesting they surfaced because he was a frontrunner coming into an election. The video drew attention for its setting and for his framing of past behavior as private matters between him and his wife, while denying coercive or abusive conduct.

The piece also highlighted the political stakes: Democrats faced a winnowing field, with top contenders like Katie Porter and Tom Steyer in play, and the broader establishment appeared unsettled by the developing disclosures.
