It also connects them to the care they need,&rdquo; the website claimed.<\/p>\n<p>While serving on the Boston City Council in June 2020, one month after the death of George Floyd, now-Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/boston-police-divert-nonviolent-911-calls-city-councilors-michelle-wu-lydia-edwards-julia-mejia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed<\/a> and championed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/boston-police-divert-nonviolent-911-calls-city-councilors-michelle-wu-lydia-edwards-julia-mejia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ordinance<\/a> that sought to divert 911 calls deemed nonviolent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2021\/08\/05\/boston-pilot-program-to-shift-911-mental-health-calls-away-from-law-enforcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from<\/a> police to social workers and health care professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Also in 2020, Wu <a href=\"https:\/\/baystatebanner.com\/2022\/04\/20\/mayor-wu-unveils-3-9-billion-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">supported<\/a> a 10 percent budget cut to the BPD, although she has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/mayor-wu-rejects-dollar10-million-cut-to-boston-police-overtime-budget-fiscal-year-2023\/40289529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">backtracked<\/a> from supporting such cuts after being elected mayor the following year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Wu and her administration announced $21 million in funding for &ldquo;in transformative funding for mental and behavioral health programs and services to support the City&rsquo;s youth and families,&rdquo; according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/news\/21-million-support-behavioral-health-services-programming-youth-and-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a> at the time, which did not mention law enforcement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"xdj266r x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs x126k92a\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">&ldquo;Our focus tonight remains on the two members of Boston EMS, including one of our BEST clinicians, who were treated and transported to the hospital after the incident on Hemenway Street in Boston.
