Morabito emphasizes the neglect of local elections, the rise of well-funded Democratic groups targeting school boards and other local offices, and the influence of emotionally charged messaging and “storytelling” to mobilize voters. She concludes that the referendum reflects fake fairness and fake democracy, and urges conservatives to organise and push back to preserve representation.

Virginia Democrats are swooning over the prospect of wiping out congressional representation for the overwhelming majority of Republicans in the state if voters pass their April 21 gerrymandering referendum. As I wrote here at The Federalist, that ballot question drips with contempt for rural voters as well as the “democracy” Democrats pretend to care about.

How did things change so fast? What’s behind Democrats’ cockiness to behave with impunity like Soviet apparatchiks? Normal Americans are still scratching their heads over the outcome of Virginia’s 2025 election that handed over the governorship and a massive statehouse majority to the Democrats. They especially wonder how Jay Jones easily won his election for state attorney general despite openly fantasizing about the murder of his Republican colleague and two young children. Not long ago, such creepiness would have totally collapsed any American candidate’s campaign.

We can attribute a lot of this current insanity to the usual suspects: a coarsening of the culture, the dumbing down of the electorate, the lackluster campaign of the Republican gubernatorial candidate, and probably a certain degree of election rigging enabled by some 45 days of early voting, mail-in voting, and ballot harvesting.

But let’s look more deeply at a few other factors that have led Virginia to this point. They include out-of-state money, anemic GOP candidate recruitment, apathy toward local elections, and emotion-laden propaganda.

Money and Campaigning from out of State

Virginia is just one of many states targeted with piles of out-of-state dark money, such as George Soros’ funds, to create one-party states. That’s pretty obvious, especially when we see Virginia voters receiving postcards pushing for a “Yes” vote on a redistricting referendum that are postmarked from places like Oakland and Santa Ana, California.

The Federalist’s Breccan Thies has covered various aspects of out-of-state meddling and dark-money propaganda used to push this referendum. One example is a faux newspaper called The Virginia Independent that has left-wing influence written all over it. Another is former President Barack Obama’s inability to retire from his constant political badgering.

Anemic GOP Candidate Recruitment

Democrats did not allow a single one of the 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates to go unchallenged in the 2025 election, not even in deep-red districts. In contrast, Virginia Republicans allowed 16 of the 100 House seats to go unchallenged, effectively handing over those seats to the Democrats who could then concentrate their money and energy on tighter races.

The result? The Democrats gained 13 seats, leading to a 64-36 Democrat majority in the House of Delegates. They had previously held a slim 51-49 majority. GOP leadership could have worked a little bit toward minimizing losses if they had simply made sure every single district at least had a “placeholder” challenging the Democrats, no matter how blue the district. Why didn’t they? It was probably a matter of sloth or betrayal. You decide.

Democrat Infiltration of GOP in Red States

This is an old story in the U.S. Congress, where too many Republicans afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome can’t even bring themselves to pass a bill that would require voter ID. Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell, John Thune, and others play starring roles in this farce. But there are many more like them acting as undocumented Democrats.

Conservatives have been enraged to see Senate Republicans who campaign on common-sense issues like voter ID side with Democrats on opposing the Save America Act. This degree of RINOism also infects state and local politics, with Democrats even looking to infiltrate local GOP leadership.

Voters Sitting Out Critical Local Elections

Ignoring local and special elections leaves a lot of room for well-organized and well-funded Democrats who do not serve the interests of the constituency. Local offices, such as school boards in red areas, are low-hanging fruit for energetic left-wing activists to get their candidates elected.

“Leftugees” who leave high-tax states for redder pastures too often end up voting for the same policies that befouled the places they left. Don’t underestimate their influence in rural areas. They run for county boards of supervisors in off-year elections, usually masquerading as “independents” in Republican areas. They can become mayors of towns where a total of 24 votes are cast. They often begin their influence by volunteering to sit on various local boards and commissions, as well as joining local clubs like Lions and Ruritan that get them connected in their communities. The bottom line is that local elections have always been a springboard to higher office.

No-shows in low-turnout elections basically hand the reins over to Democrats. Conservative pundits have written about the December 2025 special election for a congressional seat in a Tennessee district that remained very conservative even after redistricting. Though it was a Republican hold, the results reflected low voter interest among conservatives that will doom them if it keeps up. Left-wing activists have noted that in red areas, they needn’t move the needle by much to make a future impression — maybe just one or two points in successive elections.

Emotional Sway Plays a Role

Democrats rely on high levels of emotional manipulation to get out the vote, such as pretending to promote “fairness.” But in their version of “storytelling,” stoking toxic empathy is key. This can come in the form of warnings such as: Your child will commit suicide if you don’t affirm they/them as transgender. Or: If you can’t get an abortion at nine months pregnant, then you’ll never have a career. Or: Mass illegal immigration into America is the only compassionate way to solve the problems of the world.

Indeed, such “storytelling” is a huge component of all left-wing agendas. That’s probably why The Washington Post launched this new mission statement last year: “Riveting Storytelling for All of America.”

In the end, Virginia’s gerrymandering referendum is just another example of Democrats telling propagandistic stories that promote fake fairness and fake democracy. Conservatives need to understand what’s happening and fight back before they lose representation altogether.

Stella Morabito is a senior contributor at The Federalist.
