Al Sharpton\u2019s national Action Network convention. He argued the charges are cooked up to embarrass and suppress journalism,and to use laws meant for oppression against African Americans. Lemon was arrested on January 30 after covering a protest by anti-ICE demonstrators who stormed Cities Church, and he was indicted in February along with eight co-defendants for the January 18 incident. The justice Department accuses him of conspiracy to deprive rights and of injuring or interfering with the exercise of religious freedom under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. Lemon pleaded not guilty. He said there is a lot of support, and he warned that the case could chill journalism. Al Sharpton&rsquo;s&nbsp;National Action Network convention.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To me, and to most people &mdash; most sane, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >rational people &#038;mdash<\/a>;&nbsp;these are cooked-up charges to, I believe, to embarrass, to really suppress journalism,&rdquo; Lemon said during a Thursday morning panel on misinformation. &ldquo;To make journalists afraid and fearful and to second- and third-guess themselves about telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And I think it&rsquo;s also to embarrass people. And I think it&rsquo;s racist,&rdquo; he continued. &ldquo;Because they are using laws that are meant for people who are truly oppressed, meaning African Americans who fought for civil rights in this country, they are using those same laws to prosecute and persecute African Americans.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Lemon pleaded not guilty&nbsp;to the charges in February after he was indicted alongside eight codefendants in connection with the Jan. 18 incident at&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4439173\/arrested-ringleader-anti-ice-church-protest-asks-court-return-cellphone\/\">Cities Church<\/a>. He was arrested Jan. 30, days after the protest, drawing outrage from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/don-lemon-pleads-not-guilty-to-charges-for-storming-mn-church\/\" title=\"Don ... pleads not guilty to ... for storming MN ...\">press-freedom advocates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lemon, covering an event as a freelance journalist, was arrested on a charge of documenting a group of anti-<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ice\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> protestors who stormed the church.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-justice\/\">Justice Department<\/a>&nbsp;charged Lemon with conspiracy to deprive rights and with injuring, intimidating, or interfering with the exercise of religious freedom at a place of worship under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the NAN convention, Lemon pointed to the FBI&rsquo;s searching of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/01\/14\/washington-post-reporter-search\/\">a <em>Washington Post<\/em> reporter&rsquo;s home<\/a>, in which a phone and two laptops were taken, as another example of the Trump administration&rsquo;s crackdown on the press.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/4457764\/don-lemon-pleads-not-guilty-charges-storming-minnesota-church\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/4457764\/don-lemon-pleads-not-guilty-charges-storming-minnesota-church\/\">DON LEMON PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO CHARGES FOR STORMING MINNESOTA CHURCH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s tough, but I have a lot of support from people,&rdquo; Lemon said about his case. &ldquo;Look, these are very serious charges.
