But Iran also supplies several neighbors with electricity. In recent years, the main recipient of Iranian electricity has been Iraq, and as such, it stands to be one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/world-faces-severe-food-supply-crisis-if-strait-of-hormuz-blockade-continues\/\" title=\"World faces severe food supply crisis if Strait of Hormuz blockade continues\">worst-affected countries<\/a> if Iran&rsquo;s power grid is destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq has been heavily reliant on both electricity and gas imports from Iran, the latter of which fuels its decrepit power grid. As recently as 2023, Iranian gas made up 47% of Iraqi domestic gas consumption, generating 29% of Iraq&rsquo;s electricity, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clingendael.org\/publication\/misery-loves-company-iraq-and-irans-electricity-and-gas-dependencies\">according to<\/a> the Netherlands&rsquo; Clingendael Institute. Altogether, Iran provided 31% of Iraq&rsquo;s electricity in 2023.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Iran&rsquo;s electrical supply to Iraq has fluctuated since peaking in 2012, but it has plummeted in the past two years due to domestic demand and mismanagement. U.S. sanctions and the war have drawn Iranian electric exports to Iraq to an almost complete halt since January, and in April, gas exports were <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kurdistan24.net\/en\/story\/905625\/iranian-gas-exports-to-southern-iraq-halted-sparking-energy-supply-concerns\">fully cut off<\/a>. Iraq is unlikely to find a cheap substitute anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>In early March, the Iraqi power grid suffered a brief but total collapse. A spokesperson for &#8288;the Ministry of Electricity <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/iraq-suffers-power-grid-blackout-due-technical-fault-2026-03-04\/\">told <em>Reuters<\/em><\/a>  that the shutdown was due to a technical incident caused by a sudden drop &#8203;in gas supplies to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/director-adam-mckay-has-sweaty-fever-dream-his-movie-dont-look-up-converts-joe-manchin-to-climate-fear-cult\/\" title=\"Director Adam McKay Has &#039;Sweaty Fever Dream&#039; His Movie &#039;Don&#039;t Look Up&#039; Converts Joe Manchin to Climate Fear Cult\">gas-fired power plant<\/a> in Basra, a province that borders Iran. Its proximity indicates that the shutdown was likely due to the sudden cessation of Iranian gas exports to Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>If Iran&rsquo;s power grid is destroyed, it will be unable to resume gas exports to Iraq for the foreseeable future. The sudden stripping of nearly one-third of Iraq&rsquo;s electricity supplies would likely cripple the country and increase the costs of living, which, along with the political instability and refugee flow from Iran, could put Iraq in a critical situation.<\/p>\n<p>While Iraq has received the highest quantity of Iranian electricity, Afghanistan arguably has more to lose if Iran&rsquo;s power grid is destroyed. Breshna, the Taliban&rsquo;s electricity company, has reported that it can supply only 200 megawatts domestically, while total demand is around 7,000 megawatts. Abdulhaq Hamkar, the head of Breshna, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afintl.com\/en\/202602181228\">traveled to Tehran<\/a> in mid-February to negotiate an extension of Afghanistan&rsquo;s electricity import agreement with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Given the Taliban government&rsquo;s reputation around the world, it would likely be difficult for it to find an easy replacement. It would have to lean more on its <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >direct electricity suppliers &#038;mdash<\/a>; Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n<p>Iran also supplies electricity to Pakistan, but its wide array of allies and considerable power mean it&rsquo;ll probably be easier for it to find a replacement for the negligible imports. The two extended their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/impossible-gop-picked-up-seats-in-house-picked-up-state-legislatures-picked-up-governorship-held-the-senate-but-sniffy-joe-won-not-a-chance\/\" title=\"IMPOSSIBLE: GOP Picked Up Seats in House, Picked Up State Legislatures, Picked Up Governorship, Held the Senate -- But Sniffy Joe Won?... NOT A CHANCE\">power-sharing agreement<\/a> in December, but Iran&rsquo;s electricity powers only Pakistan&rsquo;s bordering Balochistan region.<\/p>\n<p>The one major impact on Pakistan could be the erasure of much of the Iran-Pakistan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/living-through-a-socialist-collapse-an-insiders-account-of-venezuelas-demise\/\" title=\"Living Through A Socialist Collapse: An Insider\u2019s Account Of Venezuela\u2019s Demise\">black market<\/a> fuel trade &mdash; Pakistan receives around 40% of its gasoline from Iran through this channel. If Iran&rsquo;s power grid is destroyed, the black market may largely go with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/4515225\/us-pakistan-relationship-could-help-end-respective-wars-iran-afghanistan\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/4515225\/us-pakistan-relationship-could-help-end-respective-wars-iran-afghanistan\/\">HOW THE US AND PAKISTAN&rsquo;S RELATIONSHIP COULD HELP END RESPECTIVE WARS WITH IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Armenia, which has enjoyed warm relations with Iran, could also suffer if Iran&rsquo;s power grid is taken out. The two have a closely integrated power grid, and if Iran&rsquo;s is suddenly taken offline, outages in Armenia <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/civilnet.am\/en\/video\/1009824\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/civilnet.am\/en\/video\/1009824\">could result<\/a>. Iran&rsquo;s energy difficulties have turned it into a net importer of electricity, and the cessation of these imports from Armenia would significantly harm its much smaller economy.<\/p>\n<p>The other country that could be impacted, though to a far lesser extent, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/caspiannews.com\/news-detail\/iran-turkmenistan-deepen-energy-ties-2025-5-21-0\/\">is Turkmenistan<\/a>. Iran receives most of its imported electricity from Armenia and Turkmenistan.
