It involves board restructuring, a claimed $257 million in funding, and a unilateral move to chair the board. A Democratic congresswoman filed a lawsuit over the name change, and the center’s leadership has seen changes, including removing a former president from the board. In early 2026, Trump announced a July 4, 2026, two-year closure for renovations, while litigation and a preliminary injunction process continue. preservation groups have also challenged the project as possibly violating historic preservation and environmental laws, with further court hearings scheduled.

– White House ballroom: A nearly $400 million privately funded East Wing ballroom project is intended to include security upgrades such as a military bunker. The project has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge amid questions about legality and authorization, with the Department of justice appealing.Despite the injunction, supporters say construction can proceed as allowed by the court, and a key federal planning body recently approved the project.

– Independence Arch: The idea of a large Independence Arch near Memorial Circle has prompted legal challenges arguing congressional authorization is required. A District Court judge has paused ground-breaking activity as the case proceeds, with parties awaiting a status update on whether construction can be halted while litigation unfolds.

– Other renaming proposals: Trump has floated renaming other major infrastructure hubs, such as Washington Dulles Airport and New York’s Penn Station, though these ideas have drawn opposition from lawmakers. In florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis moved to rename Palm Beach International Airport to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” set to take affect july 1,while a broader reception to renaming remains mixed.

the DC renovation plans are highly contested, with lawsuits, judicial rulings, and political pushback shaping whether and how these projects will move forward.

Where Trump’s DC reconstruction projects stand in court

President Donald Trump entered his second term in the White House with the eye of a veteran real-estate developer and a vision to “Make D.C.
