The judge, Gerald Pappert, said employees may decline participation, but the EEOC needs the opportunity to speak with them to determine whether there is evidence of discrimination; Penn is not required to reveal information about Jewish groups or affiliations. Penn criticized the ruling, said it plans to appeal, and argued that compiling lists by religion would raise privacy and First Amendment concerns, while noting it dose not maintain employee lists by religion. U.S. District Judge Gerald Pappert presided over the case in early March and heard claims that the university &ldquo;subjected its Jewish faculty and employees to an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >illegal hostile work environment based<\/a> on national origin, religion, or race,&rdquo; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/penn-pennsylvania-eeoc-antisemitism-baa974b32cc1dbc8060e65bf6e6a7fbc\">reported<\/a> the <em>Associated Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The order to turn over the names of Jewish staff members was deemed necessary by Pappert as part of the investigation. Employees are permitted to decline participation in the investigation, Pappert <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eeoc-probe-penn-ac1f54c0d585f7d184383f955822ec68\">said<\/a>, but also stated that the EEOC &ldquo;needs the opportunity to talk to them directly to learn if they have evidence of discrimination.&rdquo; Penn isn&rsquo;t required to divulge information about the university&rsquo;s Jewish groups or organizations or any employee&rsquo;s affiliation with the groups, Pappert said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/entertainment\/4508455\/bill-maher-press-elissa-slotkin-democratic-stand-against-iran-war\/\"><strong>BILL MAHER PRESSES ELISSA SLOTKIN OVER DEMOCRATIC STAND AGAINST IRAN WAR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The University of Pennsylvania criticized the court decision and indicated it planned to appeal the ruling. A university spokesperson told the <em>Associated Press <\/em>that the academic institution had &ldquo;taken multiple steps to prevent and address these despicable events.&rdquo; It categorized the order to provide information about Jewish employees as an infringement of its constitutional rights, while declaring it did not have a list of employees that contained their religious affiliation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;While we acknowledge the important role of the EEOC to investigate discrimination, we also have an obligation to protect the rights of our employees,&rdquo; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eeoc-probe-penn-ac1f54c0d585f7d184383f955822ec68\">read<\/a> the official statement by Penn. &ldquo;We continue to believe that requiring Penn to create lists of Jewish faculty and staff, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-calls-megyn-kelly-nasty-for-interview-that-sparked-conservative-criticism-of-him\/\" title=\"Trump slams Megyn Kelly as &#039;nasty&#039; for interview that ignited conservative backlash.\">provide personal contact information<\/a>, raises serious privacy and First Amendment concerns.
