Thom Tillis (R-NC). We need to make sure that we have an ally for Donald Trump in the United States Senate,&rdquo; he told the crowd. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s what I&rsquo;m going to be when I beat Roy Cooper.&rdquo; <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The president won North Carolina in all three of his presidential campaigns in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Trump also hosted an affordability rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, late last year, where he claimed he would restore North Carolina&rsquo;s furniture industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet a February <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/catawba.edu\/news\/all-news\/2026\/yougov-21\/\">survey from Catawba College<\/a> showed that just 38% of North Carolinians are confident in Trump&rsquo;s handling of the overall economy, compared to 46% who are not.<\/p>\n<p>Whatley said his campaign will focus on several key issues, including the economy, crime, and support for the military, or what he calls the &ldquo;North Carolina first agenda.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-caught-lying-about-buy-american-plagiarizing-president-trump\/\" title=\"Biden caught lying about \u2018Buy American\u2019, plagiarizing President Trump\">economic policies<\/a> that are going to create jobs, that are going to raise wages, that are going to raise take-home pay, that are going to lower costs,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;So that&rsquo;s a combination of tax policy, trade policy, and regulatory policies. And you know, those are the same types of issues that the president ran on when it comes to the economy.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s handling of the Iran war could also play a role in the North Carolina Senate race, as rising gas prices have stirred up more economic anxiety for voters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2026\/03\/25\/americans-broadly-disapprove-of-u-s-military-action-in-iran\/\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, roughly 6-in-10 Americans, 61%, disapprove of Trump&rsquo;s handling of the war, while just 37% approve.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Well, we&rsquo;ll have to see,&rdquo; Whatley said when asked about the war&rsquo;s impact on his race. &ldquo;I know the president is very focused right now on making sure that we accomplish our goals in Iran and get out. And the goals are strongly supported across the board, down here in North Carolina, ensuring that Iran does not have the capacity to deliver nuclear payloads to Europe or the United States, or the capacity to continue to export terrorism.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/cj-poll-cooper-leads-whatley-by-8-points-in-first-post-primary-survey\/\">new Carolina Journal poll<\/a>, conducted after the state&rsquo;s primaries, showed Whatley trailing Cooper by eight points, 49% to 41%. But Whatley could overcome the gap with eight more months of campaigning still left.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If Democrats have any chance of flipping the Senate, winning in North Carolina is an absolute necessity in addition to flipping a Texas Senate seat currently represented by Sen.
