Jon Husted (R-OH) introduced an amendment to the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act that would simply require photo ID to vote. Acceptable forms of ID include an unexpired driver&rsquo;s license with a photo, a valid passport, a military ID, an unexpired state-ID card, among others. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1250171852\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schumer-expected-to-reup-vote-on-ivf-proposal-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Schumer expected to reup ... on IVF proposal - Washington Examiner\">measure needed 60 votes<\/a> to pass but only received 53 &ldquo;AYE&rsquo;s.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Schumer claimed the amendment would &ldquo;impose the single strictest voter ID law in America.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This radical amendment would toss out every single voter ID requirement in all 50 states for federal elections and put in an overly restrictive, one-size-fits-all approach,&rdquo; Schumer reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/save-america-act-photo-id-amendment-senate-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Yet Schumer previously <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/save-act-senate-voting-bill-trump-voter-id-2d44f778d671ff4d8e2caec1a85bcb36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> on the topic of voter ID that &ldquo;Our objection as Democrats is not to a photo ID&rdquo; and that &ldquo;Democrats support voter ID. In fact, we included it and it is included in our Freedom to Vote legislation several years ago. So, we&rsquo;re not opposed.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Corey Booker (D-NJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/schumer-democrats-say-support-voter-id-block-gop-amendment-require\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> &ldquo;Yes&rdquo; when asked if he would support a clean voter ID bill and said that his home state &ldquo;has voter ID laws &hellip; I&rsquo;ve got to show my driver&rsquo;s license.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said he wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fetterman.senate.gov\/fetterman-statement-on-voting-against-debate-on-the-save-america-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep legislation <\/a>&ldquo;basic: PHOTO ID to vote&rdquo; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/schumer-democrats-say-support-voter-id-block-gop-amendment-require\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> &ldquo;If the GOP wants real reform over a show vote, put out a clean, standalone bill, and I&rsquo;m AYE.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The amendment comes amidst lackluster effort by the Senate GOP to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/16\/no-republicans-dont-need-to-change-the-senate-rules-to-pass-the-save-america-act\/\">SAVE America Act,<\/a> which would amend the 1993 National Voter Registration Act to require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot. <\/p>\n<p>Senate Republican Leader John Thune so far has refused to use a talking filibuster to get the legislation passed, which would require opposing senators to talk continuously (and only two times each) and, when they exhaust themselves, the vote would go to a simple majority vote. Instead, Thune has suggested using <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/26\/any-republican-promising-to-pass-save-act-via-reconciliation-is-lying-to-you\/\">reconciliation<\/a> to pass the SAVE Act, though Republicans have pointed out such an option is &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasedMikeLee\/status\/2036471097236058339?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essentially impossible<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
