The shutdown and subsequent understaffing at TSA checkpoints have also hit travelers hard, with security line waits reaching up to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4500200\/atlanta-airport-travelers-arrive-four-hours-early-ice-help\/\">two hours<\/a> in some airports and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/infrastructure\/4494902\/storms-dhs-shutdown-flights-airports-delays\/\">screening checkpoints closing<\/a> in several terminals.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Next to safety, Delta&rsquo;s No. 1 priority is taking care of our people and customers, which has become increasingly difficult in the current environment,&rdquo; the Delta statement shared with the outlet read. <\/p>\n<p>Many mainstream airlines have specialized services for members of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/congress\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"31\">Congress<\/a> to shuttle them to their gates safely and give them more flexibility in booking tickets. Delta is the first airline to strip these specialized services during the DHS shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Delta CEO Ed Bastian has been at the forefront of airline executives advocating support for TSA agents during this partial <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/government-shutdown\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"18\">government shutdown<\/a>. Bastian was one of 10 CEOs to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/infrastructure\/4492693\/delta-american-united-ceos-plead-deal-dhs-funding\/\">pen a letter to Congress<\/a> asking them to stop treating air travel as a &ldquo;political football&rdquo; and make a deal to end the DHS shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;TSA officers just received $0 paychecks. That is simply unacceptable. It&rsquo;s difficult, if not impossible, to put food on the table, put gas in the car and pay rent when you are not getting paid,&rdquo; the airline CEOs wrote in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airlines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/260315_Open-Letter.pdf\">letter<\/a> to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Due to increased wait times at Hartsfield-Jackson&nbsp;Atlanta&nbsp;International Airport, Delta released an advisory notifying customers that it would <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.delta.com\/us\/en\/advisories\/other-alerts\/atlanta-flexibility\">waive fare differences<\/a> for customers who rebook their flights before March 30.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s inexcusable that our security agents, our front-line agents, that are essential to what we do, are not being paid. And it&rsquo;s ridiculous to see them being <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/PCshFJLozXQ\">used as political chips<\/a>. They can do it,&rdquo; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>A DHS funding deal has seemed largely out of reach since the shutdown began in mid-February, as Democrats remain hard-line on their calls for immigration reform to fund the agency that houses <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ICE\" type=\"link\" id=\"washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ICE\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a>.
