While the first season tackles gun violence and COVID-19-related PTSD, the second season introduces a controversial ICE storyline.

in episode 11 of season two, ICE agents enter the ER, prompting a tense scene where a detainee with an injured arm is involved. Nurse jesse intervenes, and Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch confronts the agents, arguing that emergency care must be provided to all patients irrespective of immigration status. His anti-ICE tirade is depicted as a reflection of widespread frustration and fear about the agency’s presence in hospitals.

Reaction to the episode was highly polarized. On social media, some praised the portrayal of ICE as villainous, while conservative viewers and supporters of the agency criticized the one-sided depiction. Showrunner R. Scott gemmill defended the storytelling,saying he avoids social media personally and believes the team could have pushed the story further,though he stands by addressing a real national debate. HBO reportedly urged a more balanced approach, and Deadline noted the tension surrounding the portrayal of immigration policies.

the controversy underscored the show’s attempt to mirror current healthcare realities and national politics, sparking debate over how best to depict sensitive issues like ICE within a dramatic narrative.

    Read more…

The critically acclaimed HBO medical drama “The Pitt” appears to have written itself onto a political minefield — and is marching forward headfirst regardless of any backlash.

“The Pitt” follows a group of ER doctors at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Scott Gemmill is ignoring most of that noise, however, as he told Gold Derby.

“I have no social media, so I don’t really care what people say on social media,” Gemmill told the outlet. “Everybody else in my writers’ room is on social media, so believe me, if somebody comes after the show or has criticism, I will hear about it. But it’s always secondhand, which is the way I prefer to get bad news.”

Despite the already one-sided portrayal of the ICE agents, Gemmill apparently believes he did his storytelling a disservice by “trying to tell both sides.”

“In retrospect, I think we could have pushed a little harder,” he said. “We were trying to tell both sides of the story, trying to be fair, and yet, what’s happened subsequently is much worse than anything we would have imagined. It felt important to tell that story because of what was going on. I’m glad we did it.”

Gemmill seemed particularly delighted with Robinavitch’s anti-ICE tirade that capped off the episode.

“His performance really represented what a lot of people are feeling, which is frustration, anger, fear, and disbelief that this is happening in this country — and the helplessness of not being able to do anything about it,” he said.

He added, “It was something that was happening in the country and happening at hospitals. We basically try and portray the reality of what’s happening in healthcare today, and that seemed to be part of it. We were very careful how we told that story.”

Gemmill’s remarks suggest that he wasn’t quite as careful as some other members of the showrunning team. And HBO itself seems very aware of the polarizing nature of the topic.

According to Deadline, executive producer John Wells made sure to ask his HBO bosses about doing an ICE storyline, and was told to keep it “balanced.”

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! The show follows a group of ER doctors at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, with each season framed as a single 15-hour shift and each episode covering one hour. Season 1 tackled controversial topics like gun violence-culminating in the finale with the ER overwhelmed by the aftermath of a mass shooting-and COVID, including the lead Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch’s PTSD from working in the ER during the height of the pandemic. But the season-2 storyline drew even more attention with the introduction of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

In the second-season episode, ICE agents arrive in the ER, and the plot point became a flashpoint. A nurse, Nurse Jesse, intervenes when the agents grow impatient with the delays. The scene escalates as Dr. Robinavitch admonishes the agents for disrupting patient care, telling them that patients-whether documented or undocumented-have a right to emergency treatment. He laments the strain on his staff and resources, highlighting the impact of the agents’ presence on patient care and hospital operations. A portion of this moment made its way online, where reactions were sharply divided: many on the left praised the portrayal as a critique of ICE, while some conservative viewers pushed back against what they saw as a one-sided depiction.

Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill told Gold Derby that he doesn’t engage with social media personally and that he relies on his writers to hear public reaction secondhand. He later suggested that the show might have pushed the topic even further and acknowledged that trying to present both sides of the issue may have amplified the controversy. He defended the Robinavitch tirade against ICE as capturing a broader national sense of frustration, anger, fear, and disbelief about the situation in the country and in hospitals. HBO, he noted, was aware of the topic’s polarizing nature; Deadline reported that executive producer John Wells sought assurances from HBO to keep the ICE storyline balanced.

In short, the second season’s ICE storyline was intended to reflect a real and contentious debate in healthcare today, even as it provoked significant and mixed reactions from audiences

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-03-20T201559.979.jpg
[33651
10561,73780,8550,76290,23221
post-2582381","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-hbo","tag-ice-agents-2","tag-showrunner","tag-tv-series-2","tag-villains
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-03-20T201559.979.jpg
["GET
