Rounding out the field are Alexandria ocasio-Cortez at 14% and Pete Buttigieg at 11%, while Harris\u2019s lower standing in California contrasts with her <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >stronger national profile<\/a>.The results suggest Newsom\u2019s more assertive approach toward Donald Trump resonates with California voters,helping him maintain a statewide lead even as neither candidate has formally declared their candidacy. (Carolyn Kaster\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Harris, despite her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-subway-bomber-sentenced-to-life-in-prison-for-failed-2017-attack\/\" title=\"NYC Subway Bomber Sentenced To Life In Prison For Failed 2017 Attack\">long-standing ties<\/a> to California, a state where she started her political career and currently lives, trails in fourth place with just 9%.<\/p>\n<p>The results set up a striking hypothetical: two of the state&rsquo;s most prominent political exports have never faced off at the ballot box, but if Democratic voters had to choose today, Newsom would take the crown in the Golden State.<\/p>\n<p>Cristina G. Mora, co-director of the poll, said Newsom&rsquo;s more assertive approach toward President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4\">Donald Trump<\/a> appears to connect with voters in the state.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Though Californians may hold mixed views on his gubernatorial tenure, they overwhelmingly see him as the strongest counter to Trump and [Make America Great Again] candidates,&rdquo; Mora said. &ldquo;Harris&rsquo;s earlier presidential defeat, compounded by persistent voter biases against women and candidates of color, may also be shaping these early numbers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The poll also raises fresh questions about Harris&rsquo;s standing within her political base and signals how quickly the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2028-elections\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11676\">2028<\/a> conversation may be taking shape. Neither Harris nor Newsom has come out and said they are definitely running for the Democratic nomination, but both have indicated their interest.<\/p>\n<p>Though he is already considered a front-runner by many political observers, Newsom said last October he would give serious thought to running for president after this year&rsquo;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-election\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11675\">midterm elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he&rsquo;s released a book, gone on a nationwide speaking tour, and visited several battleground states.<\/p>\n<p>Harris, who has yet to win a presidential primary and was defeated by Trump in 2024 under unique circumstances, has largely stayed out of the public spotlight. Instead, she&rsquo;s chosen to promote her book <em>107 Days<\/em>, which details her abbreviated presidential campaign. In an October 2025 interview with the BBC, she said she was &ldquo;not done&rdquo; with politics, hinting at a possible run, and reiterated the position in a podcast with Sharon McMahon, responding, &ldquo;I might,&rdquo; when asked if she intends to run again.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the results of the latest statewide poll, Harris is still dominating in national matchups.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest <em>Center Square<\/em> Voters&rsquo; Voice Poll of 1,152 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, 31% said they <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_c0cbe579-b306-4407-a57b-6b590288daa3.html\">would support Harris <\/a>for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination when presented with a list of 13 leading party figures.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/4497438\/trump-should-stop-waste-abuse-ambulance-loophole-california\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4497438\">THREE REASONS TRUMP SHOULD END AMBULANCE LOOPHOLE IN CALIFORNIA<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harris&rsquo;s overall support has shifted little since a comparable nationwide poll last October, which featured eight Democratic contenders. However, her backing among independents has declined.<\/p>\n<p>In the survey, conducted on March 2-5 among 934 Democrats and 218 Democratic-leaning independents, each group weighted to reflect national representation, Harris led with support from 32% of Democrats and 18% of independents.
