The bill would repeal Washington, DC\u2019s use of traffic cameras and prohibit right turns on red, sending the measure to the full House for a floor vote; it was introduced by Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA). DC currently operates more than 530 cameras and collects fines ranging from $100 to $500, generating substantial revenue-over $620 million in the past three years, according to the DC Chief Financial Officer-though critics say the system unfairly targets poorer residents and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >exacerbates racial inequities<\/a>. Scott Perry (R-PA), will now head to the full House floor for a vote, where it will need a majority to pass. <\/p>\n<p>Washington, D.C., has over 530 traffic cameras across the district, installed at intersections where there&rsquo;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/asc.ddot.dc.gov\/pages\/methodology\">a demonstrated need<\/a>, such as areas with high crash rates or school zones. The cameras generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year for the district, but critics have argued that the cameras unfairly rake in revenue from impoverished residents who cannot afford the hefty fines and have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcpolicycenter.org\/publications\/predominately-black-neighborhoods-in-d-c-bear-the-brunt-of-automated-traffic-enforcement\/\">magnified racial<\/a> inequities across the district.<\/p>\n<p>Perry called the system a &ldquo;shameless money grab&rdquo; and said the cameras &ldquo;generate millions of dollars of revenues from the people that can likely least afford it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The residents and commuters of Washington are both sick and tired of being fleeced for hundreds of dollars of petty, automated traffic fines, all in the name of alleged safety,&rdquo; Perry said. <\/p>\n<p>D.C.&rsquo;s Office of the Chief Financial Officer said in January that, over the last three years, the traffic cameras have generated over <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4409344\/trump-administration-might-get-rid-of-dc-traffic-cameras\/\">$620 million<\/a> in revenue. Fines for violations caught on camera range from $100 to $500. The Trump administration&rsquo;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-transportation\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2527\">Department of Transportation<\/a> is also supportive of dismantling the traffic cameras, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4409344\/trump-administration-might-get-rid-of-dc-traffic-cameras\/\">according<\/a> to <em>Politico<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Several studies have shown that traffic cameras have reduced speeding where they have been installed. A 2024 <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2024\/06\/16\/traffic-cameras-dc-speeding\/\"><em>Washington Post&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>report showed that speeding infractions dropped from 7,556 citations to 316&nbsp;<\/span>in under two years after cameras were installed.<\/p>\n<p>But Perry pointed to road fatalities across the district to bolster support for the bill.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;According to public traffic data, DC traffic fatalities for 2023 were 52 and in 2024 were 52, were the highest they&rsquo;ve been since 2007, which was 54. So it&rsquo;s not getting safer out there, folks,&rdquo; Perry said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and D.C.&rsquo;s representative Del. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/eleanor-holmes-norton\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4036\">Eleanor Holmes Norton<\/a> (D-DC) have largely opposed the bill on the premise that the D.C. Council, elected by district residents, should be the ones to call the shots on local laws. Holmes Norton also argued that AAA has said automatic enforcement is an &ldquo;effective tool to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/over-55000-felons-will-have-voting-rights-restored-before-probation-ends-in-minnesota\/\" title=\"Over 55,000 Felons Will Have Voting Rights Resto... Before Probation Ends in Minnesota\">make roads safer<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The substance of this bill should be irrelevant, since there is never justification for Congress to legislate on local matters, but I will discuss it.
