The recall,led by Republican candidate Daniel Butierez,requires about 120,000 signatures within roughly 120 days to qualify for the ballot. About 500 volunteers are already collecting signatures, with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >campaign organizers signaling broad dissatisfaction<\/a> across parties about issues including crime response, homelessness, and border security. He has roughly 120 days to collect around 120,000 signatures to oust Nanos from office.<\/p>\n<p>Butierez has rounded up 500 volunteers working to collect signatures thus far, telling the <em>New York Post <\/em>this week that Nanos has proved &ldquo;an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/17\/us-news\/sheriff-leading-nancy-guthrie-investigation-faces-massive-recall-effort-from-furious-locals\/\">embarrassment to Tucson and to Pima County<\/a> with this Nancy Guthrie case.&rdquo; The sheriff faced criticism for opening up the crime scene at Guthrie&rsquo;s Tucson home in the early days of the investigation, which he later conceded was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/sheriff-in-nancy-guthrie-case-says-he-may-have-made-a-mistake-11473688\">likely a mistake<\/a>, among other issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/18PPNC9qNZ\/\">NewsNation interview <\/a>Tuesday evening, Butierez said his goal is to collect the signatures within 60 days, at a rate of around 300 signatures per volunteer, &ldquo;which isn&rsquo;t a lot.&rdquo; Aside from Nanos&rsquo;s handling of the Guthrie case, Butierez cited deep concerns about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-governor-encourages-people-to-call-police-on-neighbors-violating-covid-orders\/\" title=\"Oregon Governor Encourages People To Call ... On Neighbors Violating COVID Orders\">sheriff&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s leadership on the crime, homelessness, and particularly, the border.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Pima County borders along the border. For four years, drugs have poured across that border by drug runners and backpacks,&rdquo; Butierez said. &ldquo;And there has been one arrest.&rdquo; To the Republican candidate, the Guthrie case is &ldquo;just the straw that broke the camel&rsquo;s back.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Guthrie, mother of <em>Today<\/em> show host Savannah Guthrie, was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/4490857\/nancy-guthrie-kidnapper-sheriff-could-strike-again\/\">reported missing on Feb. 1<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Police in Pima County &ldquo;had a unanimous vote of no confidence&rdquo; in Nanos on Friday, Butierez claimed. Nanos previously received a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/tucson.com\/news\/local\/chris-nanos-no-confidence-sheriff\/article_d07f6206-b55b-11ee-8bf8-c32bd6538e1d.html\">nearly unanimous vote of no confidence<\/a> in 2024, when 98.8% among 86 deputies who responded to the poll questioned the sheriff&rsquo;s &ldquo;lack of competent leadership and mismanagement.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Pima County Deputy&rsquo;s Organization, the police union that led the poll, has also pummelled Nanos over <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/tucson.com\/news\/local\/chris-nanos-no-confidence-sheriff\/article_d07f6206-b55b-11ee-8bf8-c32bd6538e1d.html\">misrepresenting his resume<\/a>,&nbsp;including multiple times during a sworn deposition. Doing so allowed him to pass over an incident in which he resigned from the&nbsp;El Paso Police Department in 1982 to avoid being fired.
