Senators Dick Durbin and Jamie Raskin, along with Attorney General Pam Bondi, were asked to open a perjury inquiry based on a seven-page letter citing two federal statutes. they wrote in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2026-3-16%20Letter%20to%20DOJ%20re%20Noem%20Criminal%20Referral.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2026-3-16%20Letter%20to%20DOJ%20re%20Noem%20Criminal%20Referral.pdf\">seven-page letter<\/a>, citing two federal laws to support their request.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;After months of evading our Committees&rsquo; requests to testify in routine oversight hearings, Secretary Noem made a series of demonstrably false statements in a brazen attempt to undermine critical congressional oversight of the Department of Homeland Security,&rdquo; the letter states.<\/p>\n<p>The top Democrats point to Noem&rsquo;s testimony on whether the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-homeland-security\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3083\">Department of Homeland Security<\/a> complies with court orders as an example of a false statement. They argued DHS has repeatedly defied court orders, but Noem insisted otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-penalizes-giuliani-in-new-defamation-case-ruling\/\" title=\"Giuliani faces penalty in defamation case ruling.\">follow court orders<\/a> when they are given to us. Federal court orders, we follow, absolutely,&rdquo; she said at one point during the Senate hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Durbin and Raskin also alleged that Noem lied about running a $220 million DHS advertising campaign by President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> first before approval. Trump claimed otherwise after the hearings, telling <em>Reuters<\/em> that he didn&rsquo;t know about it.<\/p>\n<p>The ad campaign controversy was one of the factors that led Trump to fire Noem this month. He tapped Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/markwayne-mullin\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"21441\">Markwayne Mullin<\/a> (R-OK) to replace her.
