It critiques Pew Research Center’s 2026 American Trends Panel, based on a January survey of over 8,500 adults, which Pew says shows 60% of Americans think abortion should be legal in all or most cases. The article contends this frame suggests that post-Dobbs restrictions are unpopular, and notes Pew’s own analysis linking perceptions of abortion difficulty to state laws. It also points out omissions, such as the 76% of Americans who support some abortion limits and the 39% who believe life begins at conception. The piece notes Pew’s finding of the lowest support (23%) for unlimited abortion since Dobbs and argues that many Americans likely favor bans earlier in pregnancy, around the second trimester when fetal development is advanced. It mentions that 55% think medication abortion should be legal, but says Pew fails to highlight safety risks and the FDA review of mifepristone. It accuses Pew of using the term “medication abortion” to describe the drug involved. The article highlights that opposition to chemical abortion has risen among both Republicans and Democrats since 2024 and cites other polling indicating some fear the abortion drug regimen is unsafe or misused.
