Since the start of the Iran conflict, the strait has functionally narrowed or closed, driving up prices for oil and natural gas and affecting the flow of goods such as helium, sulfur, bromine, and fertilizers. About 20 million barrels of crude and oil products pass through the strait daily, accounting for roughly one-fifth of global supply, and the halt is contributing to broader economic strain, including higher costs for chipmaking materials. Helium, essential for cooling semiconductors, is heavily sourced from Qatar (nearly 40% of the world’s supply), sulfur from Gulf producers (around 45% of global exports), and bromine from Israel and Jordan; together with fertilizer components like ammonia and urea, these inputs are integral to electronics and agriculture. Prices for fertilizers and related chemicals have risen, with urea up about 30% recently and substantially higher year over year, prompting warnings from U.S. farmers about income pressure. The article also notes policy responses, such as IEA’s large oil releases to counter price hikes, and U.S.measures proposed to insure ships moving through the strait. It also mentions ongoing tensions, including recent projectile incidents near Iran affecting vessels in the area.

Shipping disruptions spread beyond oil: Helium, sulfur, and semiconductors

The pause in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is creating economic disruptions beyond the oil and natural gas markets, affecting the shipment of goods and commodities needed for semiconductors, fertilizer, and more.

Since the start of the war in Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, a key trading route, has been effectively closed.
