NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the suspects cited ISIS in their actions and pledged allegiance to the group while in custody; Balat reportedly wrote phrases associated with ISIS, and Kayumi claimed ISIS affiliation. the pair traveled from Pennsylvania to attend the protest near Grace Mansion, the residence of New York City Mayor Zohran mamdani, where Balat allegedly threw one improvised explosive device into the crowd and Kayumi helped deploy a second; no injuries were reported. The devices contained triacetone triperoxide and bolts, and resembled materials used in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Balat and Kayumi waived their Miranda rights, and balat is said to have suggested the plot was intended to be \u201cbigger\u201d than the Boston attack. Balat also allegedly wrote, &ldquo;Die in your rage yu kuffar,&rdquo; a phrase often used by ISIS, with &ldquo;kuffar&rdquo; being an Arabic term meaning nonbeliever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kayumi also allegedly claimed that he was affiliated with ISIS while in custody. Both suspects waived their Miranda rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Balat was asked if his and his partner&rsquo;s actions were intended to accomplish an act of terrorism bigger than the events of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/boston-marathon-bombing\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2419\">Boston Marathon bombing<\/a> in 2013.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Balat said, &ldquo;No, even bigger,&rdquo; and claimed the Boston bombing &ldquo;only&rdquo; killed three people, the complaint said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Authorities allege the pair brought homemade bombs to a protest Saturday outside Grace Mansion, the residence of New York City Mayor <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/zohran-mamdani\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11802\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, where clashes had erupted between anti-Islam demonstrators and counterprotesters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the confrontation, Balat allegedly threw one improvised explosive device into the crowd and attempted to deploy a second device that Kayumi handed him. No injuries were reported as a result of the suspects&rsquo; actions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tisch said the devices were intended to cause serious injury or death because triacetone triperoxide, a substance frequently used in IED attacks, was found on one of them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-to-know-about-the-bombs-thrown-at-anti-islam-protesters\/\" title=\"What to know about the bombs thrown at ...\">homemade explosives appeared<\/a> to be jars wrapped in black tape containing bolts, screws, and a hobby fuse, according to the NYPD bomb squad&rsquo;s preliminary analysis. The contents of the IEDs are similar to those used by the terrorists at the Boston Marathon in 2013.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The two suspects had traveled from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pennsylvania\/\">Pennsylvania<\/a> to attend the anti-Islam protest with the intent to commit violence, Mamdani said on Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/4485016\/what-to-know-makeshift-bombs-anti-islam-protesters-nyc\/\"><strong>WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE MAKESHIFT BOMBS THROWN AT ANTI-ISLAM PROTESTERS IN NYC<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Balat and Kayumi are the sons of Turkish and Afghan immigrants, respectively.
