This clarification followed a previous statement by a Bar official that, in response to a watchdog complaint, gave the impression that an investigation was underway, a claim that newspapers later reported as based on a February letter. The Bar later admitted there was no such pending investigation and said it is simply monitoring the underlying legal proceedings related to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Halligan,who had been a longtime personal attorney for Donald Trump and was appointed as the ED Virginia prosecutor,resigned in January amid judicial concerns about the legality of her appointment.The Campaign for Accountability criticized the Bar for backtracking on its earlier position. The article also notes a Department of Justice policy proposal aimed at giving the DOJ priority in ethics reviews of its current and former attorneys and perhaps pausing state bar investigations until the DOJ completes its review. (AP Photo\/Jacquelyn Martin, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before she was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3819179\/trump-ally-assumes-virginia-prosecutor-post-after-letitia-james-case-scuffle\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3819179\/trump-ally-assumes-virginia-prosecutor-post-after-letitia-james-case-scuffle\/\">sworn into office<\/a> as the top prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia in September, Halligan was a longtime personal attorney for Trump with no prior experience prosecuting cases.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog filed complaints concerning Halligan with the Florida and Virginia bar associations.<\/p>\n<p>The Campaign for Accountability criticized the Florida Bar for backtracking on its earlier statement that an ethics investigation into the former U.S. attorney was underway.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;CfA has not heard directly from the Florida Bar, but it&rsquo;s hard to reconcile this latest statement with the bar counsel&rsquo;s previous letter saying there is an investigation pending,&rdquo; Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith said. &ldquo;If there is no longer an investigation into Halligan, the question is why not, given that three judges indicated she engaged in conduct that appears to violate ethics rules.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The latest news comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/65-project-targets-over-100-trump-lawyers\/\" title=\"\u201c65 Project\u201d Targets Over 100 ... Lawyers\">state bar associations<\/a> were targeted in a new policy proposed by the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/justice-department\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"167\">Department of Justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The rule grants the department the right to review ethics allegations against its former and current attorneys first before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-moves-to-block-state-ethics-investigations-against-its-attorneys\/\" title=\"... moves to ... against its ...s\">state bar disciplinary authorities<\/a> can conduct their own investigations.
