It notes he spent about $80 million to push into a runoff against Texas Attorney General ken Paxton, a sum the piece suggests could have been better used in battleground states. The author questions weather Cornyn’s continued presence in the senate truly serves Texans, implying that voters should prioritize representatives who are more responsive to their needs.it contrasts Cornyn with his opponents, arguing that Republicans should focus on defeating the candidate the piece labels as radical, James Talarico, rather than preserving Cornyn’s tenure. The piece calls for term limits, asserting that politicians should be expendable and judged by their votes, not by how long they have stayed in office. it portrays Cornyn’s bid as part of a broader pattern of entrenched leaders enriching themselves at the expense of the country, and it urges retirement for Cornyn as a wiser path for the sake of governance.

John Cornyn is fighting like a man on a mission to get another term representing Texans in the U.S. Senate.

Unable to get what he wanted done in four terms — or 24 years — the 74-year-old now wants to remain a member of the Senate until he is 80 and probably beyond.

The question Texans should ask is simple. He is a proven conservative, but he is far from a perfect candidate.

But in any case, politicians are not royalty, and they are not supposed to outlive the furniture at the Capitol.

They are employees sent to Washington to cast votes in the interest of the people who sent them there.

They should be seen as expendable and only as good as their votes.

Their betrayals should never be forgotten, and their successes can be honored once they retire, when they finally do.

This race is supposed to be about keeping a radical out of the Senate.

Talarico is a heretic and a creep who weaponizes Scripture to push abortion and sex changes, and he should be the focus of Republican energy at the moment.

He should be defeated so badly in November that he never runs for office anywhere ever again.

But instead of preparing to beat him like a drum, Republicans are now locked in an expensive family fight that never needed to happen.

If you ask me, the blame rests squarely with Cornyn, who is not popular despite his decades in the Senate.

This is not even an attack on his age. There is a lot young people can learn from their elders.

Living to 80 is an accomplishment that surely comes with at least some wisdom.

But wisdom should also tell a man when his time has passed.

John Cornyn should spend his 80th birthday in February 2032 surrounded by his family. Instead, he wants to spend it wandering the halls of Congress and clinging to power.

It is wrong when Nancy Pelosi hangs around too long. After four terms (24 years) he wants to stay in the Senate until he is 80 and perhaps longer. Texans should ask a straightforward question: who does this serve better—Cornyn or the people of Texas? There is an argument that incumbents can keep running as long as voters re-elect them, which is the nature of the system we have.

The Texas primary on Tuesday exposed frustrations among Republicans and voters nationwide. Cornyn and his allies reportedly spent about $80 million just to reach a runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, money that could have been used in a swing state where Senate control is actually in question. Yet even with a substantial spending edge—reported as a 33-to-1 advantage—Cornyn failed to secure a clean victory. Now Republicans face months of mudslinging before the general election, while Democrats and state Rep. James Talarico—who has described God as “nonbinary”—wait on the sidelines to challenge the seat. The article acknowledges Paxton as a proven conservative but not a perfect candidate; nonetheless, it argues that politicians are not royalty and should be measured by their votes. Their betrayals should be forgotten only after retirement, and their successes celebrated then. The race, according to the author, should focus on keeping a “radical” opponent out of the Senate, with Talarico portrayed as enemies to conservative aims who weaponize scripture to defend abortion and gender-transition policies. The piece contends Republicans should rally to defeat him in November, rather than shoring up Cornyn in a prolonged internal feud.

Ultimately, the author argues that term limits are needed and that Cornyn’s extended tenure—despite decades in the chamber—illustrates why voters become frustrated. The piece suggests that it is not merely about age, but about knowing when it is time to step away. It compares Cornyn unfavorably with figures like Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell, and Chuck Grassley, who are criticized for staying too long. The message is that once you reach a certain age or have had your moment in the sun, it may be time to go. The decade-long career has had its successes, but the piece maintains that the desire to cling to power has reached a point where it harms the country, and Tuesday’s primary is framed as an argument in favor of term limits

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-03-05T170127.537.jpg
[33651
69845,75182,75183,75184,74278
post-2576668","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-campaign-finance-2","tag-john-cornyn-2","tag-runoff-elections","tag-term-limits-2","tag-texas-politics-2
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Ben-Working-Feature-Image-2026-03-05T170127.537.jpg
["GET
