It notes that Saginaw County plans to offer early in-person voting, while the more GOP-leaning Midland and Bay counties have opted not to, due to financial concerns.Local officials have asked Governor Gretchen Whitmer to provide a supplemental appropriation to cover election costs, pointing to about 270,000 residents across three counties; a similar funding approach was used for prior special elections. Democrats currently hold the Senate by one seat, so a Republican win would create a 19-19 tie, with the lieutenant governor breaking ties, though even one Democrat’s absence could derail the party’s legislative agenda. The piece also places the election in the broader context of Michigan politics, noting Democrats’ transformative 2023 agenda and recounting Republican criticisms that Whitmer is delaying the election for political reasons, while highlighting a precedent for state funding of special elections and the potential implications for future governance.

Michigan Democrats appear hesitant to expand early voting when it could help GOP in state race

A shortage of funds in two central Michigan counties could have widespread implications in a special election for a state legislature seat, potentially handing Democrats a decisive advantage in a race that could decide control of the state’s upper chamber.

Democrats currently control the Michigan Senate by a margin of one seat.
