The government said it would no longer pursue appeals of rulings striking down orders aimed at Perkins Coie, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, Susman Godfrey, and Jenner & Block, which federal judges had found violated the First, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments. Reactions from the firms varied: WilmerHale described the decision to drop the appeal as the right move, Susman Godfrey called it capitulation, and jenner & Block said the withdrawal would permanently uphold the rulings and defend clients’ rights without compromise. The targeted orders, issued in March and April of the previous year, were tied to past hires and work connected to Trump’s political and legal battles, including Perkins Coie’s depiction of Hillary Clinton and the Steele dossier, and connections to the Trump-Russia inquiry involving WilmerHale and Jenner & Block. Although the DOJ abandoned the four cases,it secured commitments from nine other firms to provide about $940 million in pro bono services to support White House initiatives,a move that provoked internal backlash and some resignations within the legal community. the department continues to defend against more than 600 lawsuits challenging Trump’s second-term agenda, even as it retreats from certain executive-order cases.

Justice Department abandons defense of Trump executive orders targeting law firms

The Justice Department on Monday dropped its legal defense of President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting several major law firms, moving to dismiss pending appeals voluntarily after lower courts found the measures unconstitutional.

In a Monday evening filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, government lawyers said they would no longer pursue appeals of rulings striking down orders aimed at Perkins Coie, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, Susman Godfrey, and Jenner & Block.
