It notes that administration officials are working to persuade lawmakers while lawmakers prepare to vote on measures that would require congressional approval for future actions, possibly limiting the president’s ability to act unilaterally. The piece highlights a divided Republican caucus—Senators Tillis, Collins, Young, and Murkowski among those weighing their positions, with hawley also involved—alongside broad Democratic support for a war powers measure, though some Democrats like john Fetterman plan to oppose it. In the Senate, Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Rand Paul (R-KY) are leading the effort on a bipartisan version of the resolution, while Marco Rubio defends the administration’s rationale. The administration argues that preemptive action was necesary to counter an imminent threat or potential Israeli strikes, a point Republicans including rubio emphasize, though Kaine contends it is indeed a pretext.President Trump defended the action in a Truth Social post, arguing Democrats oppose it only as he authorized it. Classified briefings are scheduled to inform lawmakers about long-term objectives and whether the conflict could extend beyond the five-week timeframe described by the White House.
